All candidates endorse a yes vote on telecom utility

Hats off to Honesty Day at Shellsburg Elementary

4th Annual Flaughless 5K Raises $20,000 for Wounded Warrior Project

Thank you! In memory of US Army Soldier, Dan Flaugh, 1986-2011 The 4th Annual Flaughless 5K, a memorial event for U.S. Army soldier and Vinton native Dan Flaugh, raised $20,000 for Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) bringing the total for the last 4 years to more than $55,000!  This year’s event featured speakers Keegan Birkicht, Program Director fromRetrieving Freedom, and Jeremiah Pauley, a representative from WWP.

Our 2016 calendar has lovely vintage black and white photos of the school including some buildings no longer part of the campus. The Christmas ornament is designed to mirror the Mary Ingalls School Site signs we have had installed on the Braille School grounds.

Scouting for Food: Boys to pick up filled bags Oct. 24

Area Scouts will pick up donations during the annual Scouting for Food event this Saturday. On Saturday, October 17th and Sunday, October 18th the Boy Scouts from Troop 47 and the Cub Scouts from Pack 47 went door to door in Vinton placing bags on residents’ doors. This was for their annual service project to collect canned goods and other non- perishable items for the Benton County Food Bank. The scouts, their parents and leaders will be back to these same residents on Saturday morning, October 24th beginning at 9:00 am to collect the bags that the residents have generously filled with canned goods.

Albuquerque officer -- father of Vinton woman - fighting for life after shooting

Dan Webster: Albuquerque officer and father of Vinton woman, is fighting for life after shooting. An Albuquerque, N.M. police officer – and the father of a Vinton woman – is fighting for his life this morning after being shot multiple times following a traffic stop. Daniel Webster, the father of Rebecca Ingham of Vinton, was still in surgery this morning following the overnight incident. The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Davon Lymon, has an “extensive violent crime history, including a murder charge from 2001,” according to a statement made on the Albuquerque PD Twitter page.

Wild Hair: Elementary students fight bullying with fun

Tilford students celebrated Wild Hair Day as part of the anti-bullying campaign. You may see an elementary student near you going to school looking different than usual this week. That's because the students are celebrating a combination of Character Counts Week, Red Ribbon Week and Bullying Prevention Month with a daily activity.  After Stomp Out Bullying Day on Monday, when Tilford and Shellsburg students wore boots or yellow, Tuesday's theme was "Crazy Hair Day.

Woodhouse receives Lions Club International Foundation award

Alan and Janet Woodhouse Dr. Alan Woodhouse was recently honored by the Vinton Lion’s Club with the Melvin Jones Fellow award.  Alan has served in many roles over many years, including club president.  He is best known locally for his hard work on behalf of the local club’s primary fundraising effort, the Lions food trailer.  The Vinton Lions are regulars at home football games and Party In The Park, and many other local events.

Area man recovering from beating in Wisconsin; 3 suspects face felony charges

Nick and Kristin Decker; Nick is recovering from a vicious beating in Wisconsin. A Garrison man is recovering in a Wisconsin hospital after a vicious beating. Nick Decker was injured when assailants described by witnesses as “four Mexicans” assaulted him in the parking lot of the Road Dawg Bar in Beloit. Police called the event an “aggravated battery;” it took place at around 1 a.m. Monday morning.
