iVinton will be represented tonight at candidates night

Members of the iVinton initiative to create local control of our telephone, cable TV, and internet services will be at the candidates night tonight.  Citizens involved in promoting iVinton will be available starting at 6:30 and after the meeting to answer questions from voters.  Check out the iVinton.com website to learn more, or visit us on Facebook.

Operation Backpack T-shirt fund-raiser continues

Need a new t-shirt for your fall wardrobe? Think about purchasing a t-shirt to help support Operation Backpack.    Download the order form here!   Operation Backpack is a program in the Vinton-Shellsburg School District aiming to improve the health of district elementary students. Led by high school students, the program sends home bags of healthy food and snacks with children in kindergarten through fifth grade on a weekly basis.

Operation Backpack continues serving VS families

Grand opening: Garrison residents celebrate library progress

Roger Witt created this display to honor those who have contributed to the Garrison library. Nearly ninety Garrison residents, including former librarians, city council members and library trustees, gathered outside the front door of the new library building to celebrate the progress the city has made in the past four years, and the hard work and determination that citizens showed in recovering from the storm that stole their library, Emergency Services Building and destroyed or damaged many homes.

'Blue Creek Christmas:' Area teens help set up one of area's largest displays

Olivia Coder and Casey Funk were among St. Mary's youth helping set up Blue Creek Christmas. Several members of the St. Mary's Cluster Catholic youth groups in Vinton, Urbana and Walker gathered at the Maue home north of Center Point to help Aaron Maue and his family begin setting up for the huge computerized Christmas display known as Blue Creek Christmas.  The teens are preparing for the NCYC (National Catholic Youth Conference) in Indiana next month, and they offered a few hours of volunteer labor in exchange for a donation toward their trip.

Scratch Cupcakes to be delivered to FOTSI center, Oct. 23

Garrison library Grand Opening set for Oct. 18

Garrison residents may recall this clock from the old school; it's now at the new library. The Garrison Library Board invites everyone to the Grand Opening of the new library this Sunday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m.  The event will include comments about the project and the fund-raising efforts that made it possible by Mayor Al Lindsey and Ann Jorgensen. Kadee Kirchner will cut the ribbon. Refreshments and a tour of the library will follow.

TLC Preschool visits Kacena Pumpkin Farm

Deb Kacena and TLC Preschool students pose for a goofy photo at the Kacena Pumpkin Farm. The tours at the Kacena Pumpkin Farm, are in full swing in Deb Kacena's first year as the owner/tour guide. She and husband Kevin helped at the Pumpkin Farm to their Christmas Tree Farm after the retirement of Bonnie Sanders, who led tours of the Sanders Pumpkin Farm for 40 years. Bonnie spent much time sharing her experience with Deb in the past year, and the Kacena Pumpkin Farm is now busy with fall tours from area schools, as well as many families.
