ACT 1 members begin to move into new home at former West/ICAS building

For years, ACT 1 of Benton County directors, actors and stage crew members have held rehearsals in the ACT 1 studio space donated by Jon Clingman above the downtown pharmacy that bears his name. Now, another generous donation has given the Area Community Theater  a new home, and a much larger space in which to practice. Rich Hainstock, manager of  his company, Format L.

Neighbors help bring in Howard Schoonover's final harvest

Howard Schoonover’s friends and neighbors gathered to remember him one more time, honoring a life-long farmer the best way farmers know how: By finishing his work. Schoonover died of cancer July 29. Shortly after his funeral, friends and neighbors began planning to harvest his fields. Dustin Schirm and Mark Kotouc began recruiting area farmers, along with seed company representatives, to help.

School board tours Shellsburg, acts on bond refinancing

  The school board met in regular session at Shellsburg on Monday, October 15.  They started with a tour of the facilities including the outdoor preschool area and the classroom that was remodeled last summer.  Then they conducted a work session and reviewed some of the work the district’s Design Team has been doing.   The regular meeting was called to order at 7:00 by President Gates.

Young artist has artwork signed by President Obama

Dane Moore proudly shows his drawing of President Obama & was lucky enough to have it autographed. A couple of days ago, Dane Moore, a 2nd grader at Vinton-Shellsburg, drew and colored a picture of our president, Barack Obama. When the president visited Iowa last week, Dane's picture was lucky enough to have the president sign it with "Dane-Great Picture! Barack Obama."  When asked what a president does, Dane replied, "He gives speeches, helps people, and gets to tell people what he wants for breakfast.

'Branching Out' in Shellsburg; tree planting Oct. 20 at Memorial Park

The Shellsburg Area Community Group (SACG) applied for a “Branching Out” grant with Trees Forever and Alliant energy to purchase trees for the Shellsburg Memorial Park. (This is the new city park that is being developed between the grain elevator and Bear Creek.)  A very generous grant of $2,515 has been awarded and there are twenty six trees to be planted!! On Saturday October 20, volunteers will be meeting at the park at 9 a.

New Veterans Memorial Park silhouette honors fallen soldiers

Along with the row of flags, the anchor donated by the Vince Blank family, and other tributes to veterans, a new monument honors those who have died in war, and those served with them when they died.  Ron and Carol Geiger, along with the local VFW and AMVETS posts, helped sponsor the silhouette, which depicts a soldier kneeling in tribute next to the helmet and rifle of a fallen comrade.

V-S scheduled picture 'Retake Day'

Picture retake day will be Wednesday, November 14.  Students wishing to have retakes must bring the complete package of pictures they do not want with them.  For students who missed picture day, there are order forms in the office.

Benton County Historical Society hosts traveling Civil War exhibit October 27

State Historical Museum’s “The Fiery Trial: Iowa and the Civil War” The Benton County Historical Society will host a free traveling Civil War exhibit from the Department of Cultural Affairs Saturday October 27, 2012. The trailer will be on display at the Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton from 11:00 to 4:00, in conjunction with the re-dedication of the Civil War Monument.

Civil War statue rededication to include elements of 1912 ceremony

The Civil War statue at Evergreen Cemetery will be rededicated Oct. 27.   Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton will rededicate the Civil War statue located on the east side of the cemetery on October 27, 2012.  The statue, originally dedicated on October 27, 1912, was placed to commemorate the veterans of the Civil War who had been laid to rest in the cemetery.  The rededication ceremony will honor them as well as the other servicemen and women laid to rest in the cemetery.
