Pink Night: VS, CPU boys to raise awareness, funds for breast cancer Jan. 25

Pink t-shirts will fill the stands Jan. 25 for the VS/CPU boys basketball game. Two black and gold teams will put on pink to help fight breast cancer. When the Vinton-Shellsburg boys basketball team hosts Center Point-Urbana on Friday, Jan. 25, the players will wear pink shirts made especially for that night. Those shirts will be auctioned via silent auction at half-time to raise funds for the mammorgraphy services at Virginia Gay Hospital.

Remembering 2012: October brought memorials to veterans

Remembering 2012: The Civil War statue was rededicated to mark its 100th year in October. The Vinton Palace Theatre re-opened in October with its new stadium seats.  Three people were arrested on drug charges after officers searching for an escapee found evidence of a drug-growing operation in rural Vinton. A silhouette at Veterans Park installed in October honors fallen soldiers and their comrades.  The first Flaughless 5K race in honor of Dan Flaugh raised $10,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project.

AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps Class 19 Member Spotlight: Alex Fleischer

  Name: Alex Fleischer   Hometown: San Dimas, Calif.   Alex is serving as a member of the NCCC FEMA Corps team Pine 4 at the Vinton Campus. He chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because he wanted to travel the country while making a difference in people’s lives. He has enjoyed meeting people from different parts of the country while participating in the program.

Shellsburg VFW essay winners honored

On Friday, January 4, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary 8884 members Jeanette Henry and Donna Roepke and VFW Commander of 8884 Dale Henry went to the Shellsburg Elementary School to present medals and ribbons to the third and 5th grade students who took part in our VFW Ladies Auxiliary Essay contests. Themes were "I love America Because..." for third graders and "My Definition of Patriotism is…" for fifth graders.

'Idol' audition was great experience, says Vinton native Liz Moen

Liz Moen says auditioning for Liz Moen did not get a chance to sing in front of Keith Urban or any other of the 2013 American Idol judges. Yet the 2012 graduate of Vinton-Shellsburg High School said her audition for the show was a great experience. “It was really fun and I was shocked every time they let me through the rounds,” said Liz, who sings at several locations and events throughout the Vinton area.

Tree workshops set; participants to receive financial assistance for planting

The City of Vinton is getting closer to finishing up plans for tree workshops to assist property owners who want to replant trees in the right-of-way area next to their property. We have tentatively set workshop dates and times, but need to gauge the interest of property owners to participate. The workshops held on Tuesday and Thursday will begin at 6:30 PM, while the workshop on Saturday will be at 10:00 AM.

School election Feb. 5: New board member, revenue purpose statement on ballot

There will be a special election on Tuesday, February 5th. The ballot will have two items on it. The first item is a yes/no vote on the language that will guide how we spend the 1-cent local option money and is called an election on our revenue purpose statement. The voters of Benton County originally approved the 1-cent tax in 2004 with language in the original revenue purpose statement that was good for 10 years.

Remembering the fall of 2012: September

Le Laton received many honors at a ceremony honoring the local WWII and Korea War veteran in Sept. A professor from Germany stumbled upon a unique story from the history of Vinton when he read a 19th Century letter from a Vinton man who sent $2,000 to Germany to help build a house for the poor. That professor was so inspired by the gesture that he visited Vinton to learn more about Joseph Hensing.  Other events from Vinton's September 2012 included: The Palace seating project took place, as the old seats went to a Mount Vernon community theater before the new seats were installed in the renovated theater.

War Horse: Donor funds trip to Des Moines for VHSH 'Footlose' cast members

Vinton-Shellsburg seniors who participated in the "Footloose" musical were treated to a special trip to Des Moines and a viewing of the "War Horse" stage production thanks to an anonymous donor.  The group traveled to DM before the Christmas break. Participans included Katie Paustian, Will Hancock, Austin Bader, Aaron Burkey, Megan Ternus, teachers Eric Upmeyer and Le Cox, and Rich and Mary Jo Hainstock.

Vinton Police officer Dickinson continues writing for public safety personnel

A Vinton police officer is again gaining national attention, this time by writing about Newhall. But it’s not Newhall, Iowa, but Newhall, California, that Eric Dickinson is discussing. Dickinson has written about the fatal shooting of four California Highway Patrol officers by two heavily armed parolees near Newhall, Calif., in 1970.
