Wendy Dunkelberger honored for 29 years at Vinton City Hall

Mayor John Watson presented Wendy Dunkelberger a clock to honor her retirement after 29 years. The City of Vinton held an open house Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM for Wendy Dunkelberger who has served our community for 29 years in the Vinton City Hall office.. During the open house, Wendy was thanked by Mayor John Watson and presented with a clock as a sign of our appreciation for her hard work. Many city employees and members of the community stopped by to thank Wendy as well.

Winter Blizzard Conditions Cause Outages

The first winter storm of the year in Iowa took its toll on ECI REC’s distribution system. Starting at 5:00 a.m. this Thursday, three Benton County substation outages were caused by issues with transmission lines that feed the BECCA, Lindahl, and Shellsburg substations. Near noon, the 50-mile-an-hour winds began affect ECI REC’s ice-covered distribution lines, resulting in broken lines and damaged equipment that caused just over 500 outages in the southwest Benton county service area, near Van Horne and the surrounding areas.

Lost in the Shellsburg Area

Spooky is a 12 yr old chow chow  missing in the Shellsburg area.  She is not friendly to strangers but if you see her please call animal control at 472-2337. Her family has been searching for her since Wednesday. Thank you. She has been found!!! Thanks everyone for your help! -Val

FUNDING CYCLE FOR COMMUNITY FOUNDATION GRANTS ANNOUNCED

  The Benton County Community Foundation (BCCF), an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, is announcing a new funding cycle for grants to be awarded in 2013. The application deadline for all 2013 grants will be midnight (CST) on Mar. 15, 2013, with grant awards to be announced in June.   Community Foundation grants can be awarded to 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations and governmental entities.

Tilford students, staff raise more than $10,000 for custodian John Scriven

These Tilford teachers celebrated the $10,000 students helped raise for custodian John Scriven. The pig-kissing will have to wait until 2013, but the students and staff at Tilford Elementary have more than ten thousand reasons to celebrate the success of the fund-raiser for custodian John Scriven. Although they set a goal of $7,000, the students and staff raised more than $10,000 for Scriven to help him cover medical expenses for his cancer treatment.

North Eden Willing Workers share Christmas with Lutheran Home residents

On Friday, Dec 14, members of the North Eden Willing Workers 4H club spent their afternoon spreading Christmas joy to the residents at the Vinton Lutheran Home.  During the two weeks prior, several NEWW members spent time sewing beautiful holiday pillowcases in the Vinton-Shellsburg FCS room, which was a great opportunity for some members to learn new sewing skills and for others to share their skills.

Alliant Energy workers continue to restore power to Iowa customers

Major winter storm leaves more than 23,000 without power in in Iowa Crews from Interstate Power and Light Company (IPL), an Alliant Energy company, have been deployed across Iowa in response to Thursday’s major winter storm. Heavy, wet snow and high winds, with gusts exceeding 60-miles-per-hour, passed the through most of Iowa. Crews have quickly worked to restore power to customers and will continue work this evening to restore power to as many customers as possible.

Because of the snowstorm, classes have been cancelled at Vinton-Shellsburg schools for Thursday, Dec. 20 and Friday the 21st.

Heavy snow and ice can affect natural gas meters and power lines and poles As heavy snowfall and high winds hit the area, Alliant Energy reminds customers not to forget about clearing snow and ice from their gas meter as well as their furnace vents and other vents around their home. It’s important to remember heavy snow accumulation can cover natural gas meters as well as other vents around your home.
