Winter Blizzard Conditions Cause Outages
The first winter storm of the year in Iowa took its toll on ECI REC’s distribution system. Starting at 5:00 a.m. this Thursday, three Benton County substation outages were caused by issues with transmission lines that feed the BECCA, Lindahl, and Shellsburg substations. Near noon, the 50-mile-an-hour winds began affect ECI REC’s ice-covered distribution lines, resulting in broken lines and damaged equipment that caused just over 500 outages in the southwest Benton county service area, near Van Horne and the surrounding areas.

FUNDING CYCLE FOR COMMUNITY FOUNDATION GRANTS ANNOUNCED
The Benton County Community Foundation (BCCF), an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, is announcing a new funding cycle for grants to be awarded in 2013. The application deadline for all 2013 grants will be midnight (CST) on Mar. 15, 2013, with grant awards to be announced in June.
Community Foundation grants can be awarded to 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations and governmental entities.

Alliant Energy workers continue to restore power to Iowa customers
Major winter storm leaves more than 23,000 without power in in Iowa
Crews from Interstate Power and Light Company (IPL), an Alliant Energy company, have been deployed across Iowa in response to Thursday’s major winter storm. Heavy, wet snow and high winds, with gusts exceeding 60-miles-per-hour, passed the through most of Iowa.
Crews have quickly worked to restore power to customers and will continue work this evening to restore power to as many customers as possible.
No school Thursday OR FRIDAY VS
Because of the snowstorm, classes have been cancelled at Vinton-Shellsburg schools for Thursday, Dec. 20 and Friday the 21st.

Heavy snow and ice can affect natural gas meters and power lines and poles
As heavy snowfall and high winds hit the area, Alliant Energy reminds customers not to forget about clearing snow and ice from their gas meter as well as their furnace vents and other vents around their home.
It’s important to remember heavy snow accumulation can cover natural gas meters as well as other vents around your home.
