Benton County Sheriff's Report, August 2012

Benton County Sheriff Randall Forsyth reports that deputies answered 342 calls for service and investigated 11 accidents.  Deputies attempted to serve 210 civil papers and issued 72 traffic citations and 139 traffic warnings. There were 49 arrests/juvenile referrals with 103 charges being filed in August 2012. Twenty-two (22) were simple misdemeanors, and thirty-two (32) were indictable misdemeanors, and forty-nine (49) were felony charges.

Palace seat project needs volunteers: Theater to be closed Sept. 7-20

  The Palace Theatre will be closed Friday, September 7 through Thursday, September 20 for floor polishing, seat installation and deep cleaning. On Saturday, September 8 at 9 am we will begin removing seats on the main floor. Volunteers are welcome to unbolt and carry seats.  Cordless drills with 7/16” and 1/2” sockets needed.

New Vinton Children's Librarian Amy Noe 'always wanted Sharon's job'

Amy Noe said she will soon announce story time hours at the Vinton library. Librarian Virginia Holsten just had that feeling that she had found the right candidate when she interviewed Amy Noe for the children's librarian job at the Vinton library. "She just fit," said Holsten on Thursday, the day after Noe began working in the basement of the library, where Sharon Rhinehart had been the children's librarian for more than 18 years.

Democrats, Obama campaign to open headquarters in Vinton; Grand Opening Sept. 9

  The Benton County Democrats will have a grand opening of the county’s headquarters at 905 D Ave, Vinton or the newer part of the West School Building on Sunday, September 9, from 2-4 pm. The Obama campaign will also have an office across the hall from the Democratic Headquarters and will also be open on Sunday. Please join us for refreshments and meet our local and state candidates.

Randall, Stainbrook are first two Vikes of the Week for 2012-13 at VSHS

First Vikes of the Week of the school year: Erin Randall and Beth Stainbrook.   The weekly "Vike of the Week" honor at Vinton-Shellsburg High School is a "doing something good" award. Students are nominated by faculty and then voted on by students and staff. These students will be allowed to park in the Vike of the Week parking spaces for the next week, are allowed that week to go to the front of the lunch line, and receive a t-shirt compliments of Farmers Savings Bank and Tharp Design.

Atkins Legion to host breakfast Sept 23; Sons of Legion group forms

  The Atkins Legion is organizing a Sons of American Legion (SAL) post! The first meeting will be on Sunday, September 23 at 1 pm at the Legion Hall, 89 Main Avenue. Bierschencks win annual Farmers Market Salsa Contest

VPRD Employee and Jack of All Trades Allan Merchant making balloon designs on Kids Night.   The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department is happy to announce that Dave & Lori Bierschencks were crowned the winners of the 2012 Farmers market Salsa Contest. The judges were quite impressed with all of the Salsa Entries but there was just something a little special that helped them make that final decision to pick this great salsa as the champion.

Prescription Drug Take Back Day set for Sept. 29, in Urbana

  The Benton County Above the Influence Coalition is hosting a Prescription Drug Take Back Day, from 10 a.m. to noon on Sept. 29, at the Urbana Area Ambulance building.  Local law enforcement will be stationed at the Area Ambulance in Urbana to collecting unwanted prescription drugs. This is a great opportunity for those who missed the previous events, or who have subsequently accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of those medications.

Vinton Women's Club welcomes teachers with annual reception

The Vinton Women's Club welcomed VS teachers to its annual reception on Wednesday at the Ray House. More than 50 guests, including many of the Vinton-Shellsburg teachers and administrators, attended the annual Vinton Women's Club reception at the Ray House Wednesday afternoon. Club member Kathie Ervin said the event is designed to show appreciation for the teachers, as well as to help new teachers become more acquainted with the community.
