UI COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION TO MATCH FUNDS RAISED TO RESTORE GREENERY IN BENTON CO

  Iowa City, Iowa.  University of Iowa Community Credit Union officials announced today that UICCU will partner with Trees Forever to help restore the greenery in Benton County.   The UICCU will match funds raised, up to the first $500, for the Trees Forever Recover, Replant & Restore Program. The program helps respond to communities that lose trees and natural areas to storms and floods.

VGH proceeding with mammography unit plans; fund-raising events this weekend

      Just about every week, says Angie Tharp, another area woman hears a doctor say the dreadful words that Tharp and too many others have already heard: Breast cancer.      Tharp, one of the organizers of Survivors of Benton County -- Breast Friends and Fighters, is also on a committee of women organizing the first fund-raiser for a new mammography unit at Virginia Gay Hospital.

VAMA again helps area families with school supplies

The VAMA is again collecting school supplies for distribution to area families.      Rev. Connie Wacht arrived at the Vinton-Shellsburg High School on Thursday afternoon, her car stuffed to the roof with backpacks, paper, crayons and other school supplies.      Each year the Vinton Area Ministerial Association collects and distributes school supplies to hundreds of area families.     "We have about 700 to 750 families who qualify for the free or reduced lunch program," said Wacht.

Peony liquor license suspended; business closed following sentencing of owners

     A woman walked along the sidewalk on the south side of Fourth Street, and stopped to read the signs at the Peony Restaurant. One hand-written sign announced that the business is closed. Another sign, posted Thursday on the door of the restaurant, announces that the State of Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division has suspended the liquor license of the business.

New fund to help under-insured Iowa storm damage victims

A $4 million federally-funded program to assist uninsured and under-insured homeowners affected by high winds and tornadoes earlier this year was announced recently. The Iowa Department of Economic Development (IDED) created the program using Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds made available from IDED's Opportunities and Threats Set-Aside.

27th annual Vinton cruise this weekend

The official cruise T-shirt.      The weekend of the planned 27th annual Vinton Cruise was "chaos," said Tom Johnson, one of the organizers who made the decision to reschedule the event for Aug. 13.       It's a challenge to reschedule such an event, because almost every weekend there is some kind of antique car show or cruise somewhere in Iowa or one of the neighboring states.

Boomtown, Boomfest organizers preparing for huge weekend Aug. 26-27

The sky over the Benton Co. Fairgrounds will fill with fireworks for Boomtown, Aug. 26-27.        It's just a little over three weeks until Boomtown and Boomfest come to Vinton.
