Easter Sunday: Area churches celebrate culmination of Holy Week

The Last Supper: This trailer has been on display throughout Holy Week near The Lion & The Lamb.      Easter Sunday brought the traditional culmination of Holy Week services in Vinton, as churches celebrated the resurrection of Christ. There have been church and ecumenical services throughout the week, and this trailer depicting the Last Supper has been on display near The Lion & The Lamb on Second Avenue. 

Flood impact: Farmers Sales to close in Vinton

These people gather at Farmers Sales each morning; the business will be torn down this year..     The people who gather with Dell Hanson at Farmers Sales & Service on 4th Street in Vinton will have to find a new meeting place for their morning coffee and conversation this summer.     Hanson has agreed to a flood buyout deal with the city through the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Program. His business was damaged when the Flood of 2008 caused Hinkle Creek in Vinton to rise.

Farmers Bank open house today; everyone invited to sign up for door prizes

Jeff Peterson gave tours of the new office area Monday during After 5 at Farmers Savings Bank.      Farmers Savings Bank & Trust-Vinton, which welcomed Vinton Unlimited members to the bank on Monday for an After 5 event, offered the public the opportunity to see the renovations Friday, April 22 with an open house. The event include a drawing for a 37-inch TV and other prizes and refreshments all day.     The bank renovation added more office space for Bank President Darlys Hulme as well as the Investment Services office of Jeff Peterson.

Vinton dairy farmer fined $100,000 for employing illegal aliens

        A man who employed illegal aliens at his Benton County dairy farm was sentenced on April 21, 2011, to probation.  His business was ordered to pay over $100,000.00 in financial penalties.         Kenneth Birker, age 62, of rural Vinton, received the sentence after a January 10, 2011, guilty plea to one count of engaging in a pattern or practice of knowingly employing illegal aliens.

Fish Iowa! VSMS students have chance to earn spot in state finals

Ricky Hunter, left and Brandon Price practice fishing at VSMS for the Fish Iowa contest.     A few months ago, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Shakespeare fishing supply company teamed up for a fishing poster contest.      A few Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School students entered that contest; one of them, Amanda Dedrick, received honorable mention and received a few prizes.     Now, the DNR and Shakespeare, along with the Iowa Sports Foundation, have teamed up for another fishing contest: The Fish Iowa! Games.

Ag students ask school board to consider aqua-science program

Abbie Darland, left and Colleen Finch discuss aquascience with the VS School Board.      As Iowa changes, and fewer students grow up on farms, the way Iowa schools teach agriculture is changing, as well.       One of those changes was on the agenda of the most recent Vinton-Shellsburg School Board agenda: Aquascience.      High School FFA/Ag teacher Louise Fleming and two FFA members, Abbie Darland and Colleen Finch spoke to the school board about their vision for an aquascience program at the high school.

Several express interest in V-S School Board vacancy

Eligible voters in District 1 are qualified to fill the vacancy on the VS School Board.      When the Vinton-Shellsburg School Board meets on May 16, they will begin the process of filling the vacancy on the seven-member board.      Since reading about the vacancy on the board, one person has written a letter to Superindentent Mary Jo Hainstock, and several others have spoken to other School Board members.

Large courthouse flag a gift from anonymous donor

The new 8 X 12 U.S. flag at the courthouse, a gift from an anonymous donor.      Those who walk past the Benton County Courthouse and look up at the top of the large flag pole will notice that the new flag is much larger than the one it replaced.       The 8 x 12 flag is the gift of a donor who wishes to remain anonymous. 

Family, friends honor Connie Ogier as VWC Woman of the Year

Connie Ogier's son, Kirk, recalls lessons he learned while growing up with Connie as his mom.      The grandson who chose to attend college in Iowa so he could live near his grandmother joined his grandmother's friends in honoring her as the Vinton Women's Club 2011 Woman of the Year: Connie Ogier.      Connie's children, Kirk and Tami, and Connie's grandson, Derek, were among the speakers during the annual dinner at the Vinton County Club on Tuesday evening.

Easter Bunny enlists help of Windsor Manor

Tuesday morning, the helpful folks at Windsor Manor helped to fill Easter Eggs for Saturday's Easter Egg Hunt. Thanks to their help as well as the local Kiwanis club, there will be lots of goodies in the eggs for Saturday's hunt. --- Personal to Nancy..thanks!
