It’s not unusual for the Vinton-Shellsburg School Board to listen to presentations from people with differing opinions, people who offer research to support their arguments.
But it is unusual for the board to hear presentations like this from its own middle school students.
And it all began with a twisted ankle.

For the residents of the low-lying areas along the Cedar River, spring flooding is common occurence. They have elevated their homes to protect them from the rising water.
But on Monday, the flooding came early; an ice jam caused the river level to rise, filling many yards and driveways with water. Public safety officials advised residents to evacuate; most moved their vehicles away from the water.

Doug Sayers did not just juggle for the Pack 47 Cub Scouts and their families Friday evening; he taught them the basics of juggling so they, too, could try to learn the trade.
Sayers, was one of only eight contestants chosen for the International Jugglers Association contest in 2009. He won.
On Friday, he told the Cub Scout families that he was only in the second grade when he saw his first juggling routine.

The nine boys who earned Cub Scouting’s highest honor joined hundreds of Pack 47 members who have earned the Arrow of Light honor in the pack’s 70-year history.
But Colton Evans, Dillon Fox, Jake Gram, Clint Hill, Evan Sampson, Thomas Sietz, Mason Stainbrook, Nash Stewart and Asa Van Fossen will have something that nobody else in Pack 47 has received: An Arrow of Light plaque.

Vinton Lion Don Weideman presents a check for $1,000, proceeds from the 2011 Little Vike Wrestling Tournament, to Vinton-Shellsburg High School Athletic Booster president Renee Stein.
Weideman chairs the Lions wrestling fundraiser committee for the annual event which is co-sponsored by Vinton Parks and Recreation.

College-bound Iowa youth active in 4-H and/or FFA livestock projects and current undergraduate students may apply for $75,000 in scholarships available from the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement (IFAA).
The scholarships are available to freshmen entering any Iowa two- or four-year post-secondary institution this fall or current undergraduates attending Iowa State University.

Congratulations to the speech participants who performed at the State Large Group Contest on Saturday. Six groups earned I’s. The groups receiving I’s were One Act Play, Legally Blonde Musical Theatre, all three Group Improvs and Alex Springer’s Solo Mime. Great Work people!!
And a special congratulation to the following Groups Musical Theatre (Emma, Emma, Tess, Nikki, Liz, & Maddy) and Alex Springer for being names All-State.

Vinton-Shellsburg High School Speech Department will be again hosting the Iowa High School Speech Association’s State Individual Events Contest on Saturday March 12th.
Approximately 1,200 performers from the south east quarter of Iowa are expected to participate in this event. It will be held at both the high school as well as the middle school.

The trophy case at Vinton-Shellsburg High School contains the stories of decades of triumphs by dozens of teams. Those items serve a both a tribute to the successes of yesterday's students and an inspiration to today's students.
But the newest addition to that trophy case is not the result of winning a big game against a perennial rival.

Vinton residents visited the Capitol this week. Attending a Policy Class with UNI, Victor and Michelle Schmidt met with Rep. Dawn Pettengill (R-Mount Auburn).
The members of the Vinton-Shellsburg alternative high school also visited the State Legislature, and posed at the Speaker's chair with Rep. Pettengill.
