Alex Springer to silently represent VSHS at All-State Speech Festival

These photos show Alex Springer's many faces as he performs his solo mime act, 'Jekyll and Hyde.'        Alex Springer’s successful performance last Saturday combined his love of hip hop dancing with a famous piece of English literature that is marking its 125th anniversary this year.      He stood alone – without saying a word – to compete in an event called the Large Group State Speech Contest.

AmeriCorps Class 17 team leaders arrive in Vinton; help at Tilford

For some, it was the beginning of a second AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) adventure.

'Pink Nights' continue at VSHS; efforts unite survivors, students

Dawn Yenser      It was just over a year ago when Mindy McClintock and Deb Hanneman organized the first "Pink Night" at Vinton-Shellsburg High School. The effort was a sucesss; the girls raised $1,000 and donated it to the Virginia Gay Hospital for its breast cancer detection programs.      This year, the effort continues, with more participants, and more connections among those affected by the illness.

Area Farm Bureau leaders hear about need for farmers to tell their own story

Area Farm Bureau leaders listened to Troy Hadrick speak of the need for farmers to educate others.        Area Farm Bureau leaders, including Al and Ruth Schafbuch, gathered in Cedar Rapids Monday evening to hear a South Dakota rancher discuss the need for farmers to tell the story of agriculture.      Troy Hadrick and his wife Stacy began a three-day “Lead Out Loud” tour in Iowa Monday at the Kirkwood Hotel in Cedar Rapids.

Several VSHS Band members chosen for UNI Honor Band

These VSHS band members will play with the UNI Honor Band.      Vinton-Shellsburg High School Band Department students have been selected by UNI for this year’s Northern Festival of Bands.      The following students have been selected for participation:  Emma Lippmann (oboe), Kayla Peterson (clarinet), Claire Andreesen (alto saxophone), Nick Gardner (tenor saxophone), James Yenser (trombone), Megan Jorgensen (trumpet),  Aaron Burkey (trombone), and Kosy Brown (clarinet).

VSHS students earn many Division 1 ratings at Large Group Speech event

Many VSHS speech students earned Division 1 ratings from judges at Large Group event Saturday.        Several Vinton-Shellsburg High School speech students received a ONE rating at the Iowa High School Speech Association’s District Large Group Speech Contest held at Montezuma High School on Saturday January 22nd. They advanced to the State Large Group Speech Contest held this past weekend at Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids.

New member joins Vinton Today staff

Arianna Gates will soon be seen as she accompanies grandfather Dean Close to area events for VT.      Vinton Today is proud to introduce the newest member of our team.      Arianna Isabella Gates joined the VT family on Thursday, Feb. 3. She joins Liana Gates in the Support Team. Support Team members help inspire Vinton Today writers and keep the staff from becoming too grumpy. They also, by their words and action, provide a variety of inspiring and often humorous story ideas.

Woman injured in car-semi collision on Highway 30 Friday

     One woman was injured in a two-vehicle accident Friday morning near the intersection of Highway 30 and Highway 218.      According to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, a southbound driver failed to yield at a stop sign and was hit by a semi-trailer. The woman driving the car was taken by air ambulance to a Cedar Rapidshospital.

Steeler fan redecorates his snow for party

Steeler fan Dennis Bramow has replaced the green & gold painted by a prankster with Steeler colors.      When Dennis Bramow's friends and family gathered at his house for the Super Bowl party Sunday afternoon, the house with the Pittsburgh Steelers flag hanging from the garage had matching colors painted in the snow along the curb.      Where a prankster had painted the familiar green and gold of Green Bay and a message, "Bramow loves Packers" and other pro-Packer sentiments, the snow was covered with the black and gold of the Steelers, and the iconic 3-diamond logo of the football team from the Steel City.
