Vinton area residents help Haitians recover from earthquake

Vinton residents Leo Wobeter, Dixie Fank, J.R. Schemmel and Sr. Mary Hargrafen  traveled to Haiti.        (Editor’s note: For several years, many volunteers from the St. Mary’s parish in Vinton have been working to help people – particularly children – in Haiti to overcome their poverty. The long-term goal says Vinton resident Leo Wobeter, is to give the children of Haiti the education they need to lift themselves out of poverty.

2011 Robert D. Blue Scholarship Application is Available Online

  State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald announced today that the application for the 2011 Robert D. Blue Scholarship is available online at www.rdblue.org. All Iowa residents who plan to attend college in Iowa for the 2011-2012 school year are eligible to apply. Awards are based on financial need, an original essay, academic achievement and written recommendations.

Many familiar faces will work behind the scenes for ACT 1's 'Picnic'

       In addition to the new and familiar faces that ACT 1 lovers will see on the Palace stage when “Picnic” opens March 11, there will be many familiar names and faces working behind the scenes to make the show a success.     “Picnic” is a drama written by William Inge that can be humorous as well as intense.

Gardner, Yenser to represent VSHS in ISU Honor Band

James Yenser, left, and Nicholas Gardner will perform with ISU Honor Band next month.        The Vinton-Shellsburg High School Band Department is proud to announce that two of its band students have been selected for and will be participating in the Iowa State University Honor Band on February 3-5.  The following students will be attending: Nicholas Gardner (tenor saxophone) and James Yenser (trombone).

Senior Night in Pink as VS swimmers help with breast cancer awareness

The VS boys swim team wore pink caps to show support for school's efforts to fight breast cancer.      The Vinton-Shellsburg swim team wore bright pink swimming caps during their meet with Decorah Tuesday night to show their support for the VS girls' basketball team's efforts to raise money for breast cancer research. The girls have been selling T-shirts as a fund-raiser, and they were available for sale at the swim meet as well as the basketball game Tuesday.

     Coming soon to a computer screen near you: V-S VREP.      "VREP?" you ask? "What's that?"      For school administrators and high school teachers, VREP is all about changing the education model. They use phrases like "rigorous learning in independent and collaborative environments.

Trudy Evans gave a lesson in crocheting... Trudy Evans spent some time Tuesday morning during the meeting of the Prayer Shawl Ministry helping a new member learn some new stitches. Maple 4 returns to Vinton for final time before AmeriCorps graduation
