LEC progress: building takes shape as exterior work nears completion
Every day, the exterior of the new Benton County Law Enforcement Center looks more like a building and less like a job site.
Workers have been installing the limestone blocks from the old building on the lower areas of the new LEC. Work is also progressing on the east side of the building, which will house the administrative offices.
The goal of the construction crews is to have the building enclosed and weatherproof by winter so interior work can proceed.
Kapucian named an assistant GOP leader in Iowa Senate
DES MOINES – On Monday, Senate Republicans met at the Capitol and elected leadership for the 84th General Assembly, which convenes on January 10, 2011. Among the Assistant Leaders chosen to represent Republicans was Senator Tim Kapucian (R-Keystone).
“I am really looking forward to working with my fellow Republican leaders to reduce the size of government, help grow sustainable jobs in Iowa and put our fiscal house in order,” said Kapucian.
Newest barn quilt in county at Flickinger farm
Maurice Flickinger spent most of Tuesday on part of the roof of his barn on 24th Avenue Drive.
Flickinger and his wife, Joyce, recently purchased a barn quilt from Janice Jefferson of Dunkerton. Flickinger and Larry Kettler installed the quilt.
Barn quilts decorative wooden panels placed on barns or other farm buildings. They are called "quilts" because they use patterns that are often associated with quilt-making.
Squad car damaged as deputy encounters deer while responding to call
A Benton County deputy escaped serious injury in an accident overnight.
On Wednesday morning, several people reported seeing the damaged squad car on a tow truck.
Deputy Jerry Michael of the Sheriff's Department said that he had heard a deputy was responding to a call when a deer crossed the path of the squad car.
Farmers,ranchers encouraged to vote in FSA county committee elections
Farm Service Agency (FSA) State Executive Director John R Whitaker announced that the 2010 FSA county committee elections has begun with the mailing of ballots to eligible voters. The deadline to return the ballots to local FSA offices is Dec. 6, 2010.
"All eligible farmers and ranchers can make a difference by voting in this year's county committee elections," said Whitaker.
ACT 1 dinner theater: 'Educating Rita' performances set for Nov. 20-21
ACT I of Benton County is pleased to announce a special cooperative event with The Old Creamery Theatre Company of Amana. On Saturday, November 20 and Sunday, November 21, 2010, The Old Creamery will present the play Educating Rita by Willy Russell at the Vinton Country Club, as part of a dinner theatre program sponsored by ACT I.

Peony owner appears in court today -- nearly two years after search warrant
A Hispanic man identified only as “Jose” in federal court documents boarded a bus in Chicago in November 2008. He rode that bus to Iowa City, where his new boss gave him a ride to his new job, and his new home.
The very next day, officers from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Jose in Vinton.
FOTSI bracelets give members a chance to explain what FOTSI means
A few months ago, Regina Malaska, one of the volunteers of the Friends of the Shelter, Inc (FOTSI) saw a friend, Maria Davis, wearing a bracelet made from buttons and blocks with letters.
She immediately thought that bracelets like that would be a good way for animal lovers to show their appreciation for their pets. It also, she thought, could help raise awareness for the Vinton Animal Shelter and FOTSI, the organization that seeks to raise funds and organize volunteers for the shelter.
ISU Extension Offers Ag Chemical Dealer Update
Updates on the latest crop production products and recommendations for seed, fertilizer, and ag chemical dealers are the featured topics of the Ag Chemical Dealer Update on December 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. in the Highlander Conference Center in Iowa City. “These meetings are a chance for ag input dealers to meet with Extension specialists to review current research, discuss new products, and learn of new recommendations,” says Jim Fawcett, ISU Extension field agronomist in eastern Iowa.
