Union athletes help at NE Iowa Special Olympics event
A total of 35 Union High School football and volleyball athletes volunteered to help this past Sunday at NE IA Special Olympics.

Several area snowmobile enthusiasts, led by the youngest among them who won first place in his first race, competed in the Jack Race in Clear Lake in February.
Vinton-Shellsburg High School student Jared McGowan won one of the Radar Runs (drag races) in his first attempt at such a race. He wore the same number, 3, that his father, Josh, wore in his racing days. Johnson named Wamac-West hoops Coach of the Year; several Vikes honored
The Wamac Conference has announced its All-Conference boys basketball teams, and Vinton-Shellsuburg Coach Joe Johnson has been named the Wamac West Coach of the Year.
Coach Johnson and his staff led V-S to a 14-7 record, a 13-win improvement over last season.
Viking players honored include: Tyler Stueck, first team; and Austin Bohnsack, second team. Viking football schedule: Less travel, more local rivalry games
The Vinton-Shellsburg football team has learned its schedule and district assignments for the next two seasons. The Vikings will travel a bit less and play most of the neighboring schools in 2016 and 2017.
The Vikes have been assigned to Class 3A, District, 3, along with Benton Community, Charles City, Decorah, Independence, South Tama, Waverly-Shell Rock and C.
Viking bowler Nick Stein nominated for KCRG Athlete of the Week
Nick Stein, who won the individual championship and led the Vinton-Shellsburg boys bowling team to the team title in the Class 1A State Bowling Tournament last week, is one of three nominees for the KCRG-TV Athlete of the Week.

A year ago, Nick was an Athlete of the Week nominee after finishing fourth at the state bowling event. Griffith named to Wamac-West All Conference first team
The Wamac-West All-Conference teams have been announced, and Vinton-Shellsburg senior Maci Griffith has been named to the first team.
Griffith recently passed the 1,000-point milestone.
Other Vikettes recognized include seniors Jarrica Speidel and Lyndsey Cornell; both received Honorable Mention.

This time of year is a busy one for high school athletes. The State wrestling tournament wrapped up over the weekend, and the State Bowling Meet is under way in Des Moines today.
Tonight, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings Basketball team travels to Mount Vernon for its first-round district game. The winner will play the Benton-CPU winner for the District title and will advance to the Sub-State game at the U. Hyland places 7th at State Wrestling Meet
Viking senior Nick Hyland ended his successful wrestling career with a win, finishing in seventh place in the Class 2A 145 bracket at the State Wrestling Meet.

The other Viking in the meet, freshman Luke Radeke, lost his first round match, then won his second match but was eliminated after his second los. Vikings Hyland, Radeke still in contention for State medals
Despite first round losses on Thursday, both Nick Hyland (145) and Luke Radeke (106) advanced with wins in their first wrestleback matches Thursay evening.
Hyland lost his first round match to seeded Brady Brott (Clarion-Goldfield-Dows), 3-1. Hyland then defeated Jaret Probasco (South Tama), 7-3.
Radeke lost his first round match to Kole Hanson, Atlantic, by a score of 7-5. VS boys return to State Bowling contest with tournament win; Vikettes 3rd
The Vinton-Shellsburg boys bowling team has earned its second straight trip to the State Bowling Contest, despite bowling a team score that is about 150 points below their average, during Tuesday's qualifying meet in Vinton.
The Vikings finished first with 2,807 total points at Berry's Lanes, with Waterloo Columbus finishing second. West Delaware was third; Dubuque Wahlert, fourth; Cascade, fifth; and Denver, sixth.
