Turning Laps for the Community; how Benton Co. Speedway helped in 2010

1st Autism Awareness Night and bicycle races took place August 29 at the Benton County Speedway The 2010 Benton County Speedway racing season wrapped up with another successful year for both racers and community organizations. Over $4,000 was raised for non-profit organizations during Sunday night racing events, including over $400 for the Vinton Area Dollars for Scholars, almost $600 for the Family Nurturing Council and over $2,200 for Iowa’s Bravest.

Playoff picture improves: Vikings win 52-17 at CPU

Logan Williams crosses the goal line to give Vikings a 20-10 lead at CPU. The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings improved their playoff chances on Friday moving up in the District 5 standings after their biggest victory of the year. They won 52-17, at Center Point-Urbana, spoiling Homecoming for CPU. The victory moved the Vikings into fourth place in the District with two weeks left in the schedule. The top four teams advance to the playoffs.

VS boys 5th, girls 9th at W. Delaware Cross Country meet

Liz Moen runs for V-S girls at W. Delaware meet. The Vinton-Shellsburg boys finished fifth in team scoring at the West Delaware Cross Country Meet Tuesday. Cory Mayhew led the Vikings, finishing 15th. The top V-S finishers were: Ricky Jeray, Sam Martin, Parker Oltrogge and Wyatt Oltrogge. In the girls' competition, Vinton-Shellsburg finished ninth in the contest won by Benton Community.

Football wrap up: Vikings at .500 for season; Union, Marion undefeated

After the sixth week of the 2010 football season, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings are at .500. They are 2-2 in District 5 action and 3-3 overall.  The Vikings traveled to Anamosa, where they defeated the winless Raiders, 58-14. The Vikings' 2-2 record puts them in a three way tie in their district, But according to the point standing system used by the Iowa High School Athletic Association, the Vikings are in sixth place as they head into the final third of the season.

Cross Country team completes traditional journey with football from Marion

The VS Cross Country team accepts game ball from Marion coach before leaving for Vinton Friday. Each year, at Homecoming, The Vinton-Shellsburg Cross Country Team carries the game ball from the opposing school to the Vinton-Shellsburg football stadium.  This year, the journey led from Marion High School to Vinton. The seniors, at first, and then the rest of the team, accepted the ball from the Marion coach. They then took turns running the ball to Vinton before carrying it to the field to present it to Viking Coach Pete Farley just before the game began.

Sophomores come from behind for win, but VS varsity loses to Marion, 35-7

Josh Ferguson crosses the goal line after interception; sophomores come back to defeat Marion. Down 20-12 halfway through the fourth quarter, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings sophomore team inspired the Homecoming crowd with two big plays to tie and win the game.  First, Josh Ferguson intercepted a Marion pass and returned it for a touchdown. After forcing the Indians to punt, the Vikings took the lead on a long run by Chris Merchant.

Punt Pass and Kick winners advance to State Contest

This past Saturday, September 18th, a dozen Vinton youth ages 8 through 12 fought the dreary morning weather to see who could punt, pass and placekick a football the farthest. This event was held at the V/S high school football field and hosted by the Vinton Parks & Recreation Department. The winner in each age group and gender will now have the opportunity to participate in the State Finals on Saturday, October 16, at the Iowa State University Football Indoor Practice Facility in Ames.

Vikings suffer first district loss at Western Dubuque, 33-22

  The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings went to Farley, hoping to extend their winning streak to three games. But Western Dubuqueplayers celebrated Parents Night by defeating the Vikings 33-22. The Bobcats scored first as they kept the Vikings from getting a first down in their first two possessions. After two Vikings punts, the Bobcats scored on a 50-yard-drive, getting their first touchdown on a short pass.
