Sophomore Gunner Tranel pitched a complete game, five-inning shutout as the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings defeated Union 11-0 in Game 1 of a double-header in La Porte City.
The Vikings also won the nightcap, 14-6. In that game, sophomore Bryce Burroughs pitched into the fourth inning. Burroughs held the Knights scoreless in the first and third innings, but a combination of walks, errors and three hits contributed to a 6-run second inning.

Nolan Edwards hit a two-run, seventh-inning home run to give the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings a wild 14-13 win against DeWitt Central Thursday evening in Vinton.
The Sabers came back to win another close and wild one, 9-8, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Central was the home team; the game was originally scheduled to be played at Modern Woodsman Stadium in Davenport, the home of the Quad City River Bandits.

Senior Taylor Leyden led off the game with a home one, and ended it the same way.
In between, he pitched all nine innings as the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings took Game 1 from Clear Creek-Amana, 4-3.
The extra-inning win was followed by a loss, as the Clippers came back to win Game 2, 9-7. A five-run first inning gave the visitors a lead they would never give up.

Nothing like a little drama… The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes wrapped up their fifth-straight winning season and did it in dramatic fashion Tuesday night with a 5-4 win over Jesup in a non-conference tilt at Thole Field. The Vikettes (18-14 overall) got a big two-out, two-run single from sophomore shortstop Ashley Strong in the sixth-inning and strong relief pitching from Lindsey Noren to close out the win before an excited Senior Night crowd.

Baseball diamonds around Iowa sat empty over the weekend and into Monday, as high school baseball and softball teams entered their final weeks of regular season play before beginning their hopeful journey to the State Tournaments.
Vinton boys and girls were both rained out Monday night, and are scheduled to play at home tonight. The Vikings host Clear Creek-Amana at 5:30 p.

double their money with a long run at the front of the IMCA Modified
feature field this Sunday, July 11 at Benton County Speedway.
The headline event pays $1,250 to win and an other $50 for each of the
40 laps led, plus another $250 to the leader at midway, making for a
potential payoff of $3,500.

The Vinton-Shellburg baseball team lost two against Solon on Wednesday night, then traveled to Manchester, where the split a double-header with West Delaware.
At home Wednesday, the Vikings faced a 28-2 and top-ranked Solon team that includes no senior starters. The VIkings lost 11-1 and 17-2.
The team plays Monday, at home, and then on next Thursday, will travel to the Quad Cities, where they will play in the stadium used by the Minor League River Bandits against Central DeWitt.

The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings host Solon tonight in a varsity double-header after a difficult day in Waterloo on Monday, when they lost both games to Waterloo Columbus.
The Vikings made several errors in both games. They lost a 9-8 heartbreaker in Game 1 when the umpire called a balk with a man on third in the bottom of the seventh inning. The balk forced in the winning run.

Traer -- All the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes needed in the seventh inning Tuesday night at North Tama was three outs. They only got two.
The Vikettes (16-13 overall for the year), dropped a tough 7-6 loss to the Redhawks on the road in one of those "what might have been..." games. V-S fought back from a 3-2 hole in in the fifth inning to forge a 6-3 lead going into the last seventh.

The Americans, said the sports announcer,were "at sixes and sevens" in the first half, but they made the match level in the second half.

What?
Every time the World Cup comes on, I try to watch it, giving the world's favorite a sport half a chance to earn something besides my scorn.
But every year, the soccer players do enough silly things to restore my confidence in the future of baseball and football as America's favorite sports.
