State Community College Group Honors Kirkwood Nursing Dean

A Kirkwood Community College dean received singular recognition from the Iowa Association of Community College Trustees. At their annual meeting in Marshalltown on July 29, the IACCT board named Nursing Dean Sandra Cooper as the organization’s 2010 Iowa Outstanding Administrator/Manager. They recognized Cooper’s efforts to build Kirkwood’s Nursing program into one of the largest and most successful in the state.

Welcome Week 2010 at Kirkwood: Daily activities and free food rule, Aug. 23-27

    Kirkwood Community College will bring in the school year with an annual celebration of Welcome Week. This full week of free food and events will be held August 23-27 for new and returning students. “Welcome Week is the kick-off week to a great school year full of fun activities,” said Tera Pickens, Kirkwood Admissions advisor.

Kirkwood Main Campus Open Extra Hours, Aug. 14 and 21

Iowa City Campus also plans extra student assistance hours, Aug. 21 With an expected rise in new student enrollments, Kirkwood Community College will be open extra hours for two Saturdays in August. Key main campus offices will provide student assistance from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. August 14 and 21. College staff will be on hand to help students “finish up for fall” before the start of classes on August 23.

Creating a Family Emergency Plan

Mother Nature is unpredictable, and this time of year often creates threatening weather. Because we can’t foresee when the next flood, tornado or fire may occur, it’s a good idea to have an emergency plan in place. Here are some tips for preparing for the unexpected. Develop a family communication plan: Your family may not be together when a disaster occurs, so plan in advance how you’ll contact one another in different situations.

Kirkwood Posts Strong Summer Enrollment:

Close to 8,000 students taking classes; Credit classes interest also up for Fall 2010 The parking lots and classrooms at Kirkwood Community College were notably busier again this summer. Officials at Kirkwood report an increase of more than 13 percent in college credit enrollments for the 2010 summer session. Official enrollment was marked at 7,990 credit students, an uptick of 960 people enrolled from the official count of summer 2009.
