Secretary Naig Encourages Iowans to Apply for 2022 Specialty Crop Block Grant

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig announced today that the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship is now accepting applications for the 2022 Specialty Crop Block Grant Program. To qualify, the grants must be used to support projects that raise awareness about or drive demand for specialty crops grown in Iowa.“Specialty crop block grants are a win-win for producers, distributors and consumers,” said Secretary Naig.

TOYS FOR TOTS CAMPAIGN PROVIDED FOR MORE THAN 19,000 CHILDREN

 Fareway recently presented a check for nearly $355,000 to the U.S. Marine Corps for their Toys for Tots campaign, which provides toys to children during the holiday season. In addition, more than 110 pallets of toys were collected and donated. Monetary and toy donations were accepted at all 129 Fareway store locations from Friday, November 26 through Friday, December 24.

Deadline to apply for Discount on Spring Crop Insurance Extended

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig has extended the deadline for farmers who planted fall cover crops to sign up for a $5 per acre discount on their 2022 crop insurance premiums. Farmers and landowners now have through Jan. 28 to sign up online at apply.cleanwateriowa.org.Fall 2021 cover crop acres enrolled in other state or federal cover crop cost-share programs are not eligible.

Casey's recognized with 2022 Renewable Fuels Marketing Award

 Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig today announced that the winners of the 2022 Renewable Fuels Marketing Awards are DANLEE Corp and Casey’s General Stores. The awards were created to recognize fuel marketers that have gone above and beyond in their efforts to promote and sell renewable fuels.“Renewable fuels create additional markets for agricultural products and jobs in rural communities.

Farm to Table Task Force Makes Recommendations to Iowa Legislature

By Courtney LongA diverse group of local food experts from across the state submitted a set of recommendations to the Iowa Legislature that are intended to improve the farm to table supply chain. The Farm to Table Task Force commissioned during the 2021 state legislative session and led by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach met over the last several months.

Urbana Meals on Wheels available though 4th St. Diner

Meals on Wheels are being delivered in Urbana on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. If you would like to sign up to receive a meal call Linda Lough at 319-472-4761. The cost is $3.25 if you are 60 or older and $4.25 if you are younger than 60. You will be billed at the end of each month for the meals you have received. If you wold like to volunteer to deliver meals contact Trish Peebles at tpeebles@fmtcs.

Benton County Brewing Company Opens its doors in Belle Plaine

"It's our objective to make the finest handcrafted brews to put Belle Plaine AND Benton County on the Craft Beer Map," said Marty Wittrock. Opening its doors officially this past weekend on Saturday, December 18th, the Benton County Brewing Company, sold out of its canned craft beers in 2 hours - TWICE.The brewery in Belle Plaine is the first craft beer brewery in Benton County, specializing in two things, Wittrock said, creative brews and sharing the history of Benton County through their beers.
