AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps Class 19 Team Leader Spotlight: Andrew Burns

Andrew Burns By: Krista Eichhorst Name: Andrew Burns Hometown: Canal Winchester, Ohio Andrew is serving as the Hickory 1 NCCC FEMA Corps Team Leader at the Vinton Campus. He chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because he wanted an opportunity to gain career direction, grow as an individual, and develop leadership experience while giving back to different communities.

NCCC Team Maple 7 Gets Courageous

 Maple 7 Corps Members at weekly dance for campers   By: Ashley Carmichael   For eight weeks, Maple 7 is working at Camp Courageous, a year-round respite care and recreational facility in Monticello, Iowa. Camp Courageous serves over 6,000 individuals with disabilities annually and with the help of a NCCC team they are able to take campers off the waiting list. The team is providing personal care for the campers and leading camp activities.

Academic Achievement Awards: VSHS students honored

Vinton-Shellsburg High School students (sophomores, juniors and seniors) received recognition for their academic success during the annual ceremony on Thurssday.  The guest speaker was John Mossman, a VS graduate and local lawyer. NCCC Team Maple 4 Aids Flood Recovery Efforts in Minot

By: Lauren Brostowitz   NCCC team, Maple 4, arrived in Minot, N.D. on August 17 to continue to assisting the Lutheran Disaster Response in supporting individuals and families with long-term flood recovery efforts. Working diligently to help place residents back into their homes, Maple 4 mucked homes containing lost possessions, gutted insulation and building materials that suffered structural integrity as well as power washed and sanitized to discontinue the growth of mildew and mold.

AmeriCorps NCCC Class 18 Corps Member Spotlight: Zach Brazan

Zach Brazan By: Rachel Lebeaux   Name: Zach Brazan Hometown: Greenville, Miss.   Zach is currently serving as a member of Oak 4 with the AmeriCorps NCCC at the Vinton Campus. Zach joined NCCC, after serving with AmeriCorps State and National. He worked with the Florida State Parks and acquired a variety of trainings and skills including the use of a chainsaw a two ton dump truck, environmental protection and education, community development, disaster relief and technology.

Victoria Felt By: Krista Eichhorst Name: Victoria Felt Hometown: Manteca, Calif. Victoria is serving as the Pine 1 NCCC FEMA Corps Team Leader at the Vinton Campus. She chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because she thinks it is important for young people in this country to gain life experience and perspective. Victoria graduated from East Union High School in 2006 and Humboldt State University in May 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in social work.

NCCC Team Gets in the Camp Spirit

  AmeriCorps NCCC team, Oak 2, worked in Oscoda, Mich. with YMCA Camp Nissokone.  At Camp Nissokone, NCCC members had the chance to experience the various camp activities while working to improve the facilities for future campers. The enthusiastic Mick Lee was the point of contact for the camp and provided NCCC members with a work hard play, hard attitude.

Celebration to honor Lee Layton Korean and WWII vet

Lee Layton Please join us at a celebration to be held in honor of Lee Layton who served in both the Korean War andin World War II. This even will be held at the Vinton American Legion Hall located at 105 N. R Ave. in Vinton, on Sunday, September 23, 2012 from 1-3 pm.

NCCC team Cedar Four works with the City of Sioux Falls

NCCC Cedar 4 Team Leader Joe is educating the two campers about vegetables growing in the bin.     By Jerome Frey   NCCC team Cedar 4 is working with the city of Sioux Falls, SD. During this project the team had the opportunity to work with many organizations including, Habitat for Humanity, Ground Works, Eco-Camp, Downtown Sioux Falls and DakotAbilities. During their work with Habitat for Humanity the team scrapped and painted two houses.

AmeriCorps NCCC Class 18 Corps Member Spotlight: Gina Mazzulli

    Name: Gina Mazzulli Hometown: Quincy, Mass.   Gina is currently serving as a member of Cedar 5 with the AmeriCorps NCCC at the Vinton Campus. Gina is a former Corps Member at the Charleston Campus. Through her service at the Charleston Campus, Gina gained skills in installing drywall, painting, roofing and trail building.
