Hello District 84 from the State Capitol!

 The Iowa Legislature is marching its way towards the end of session, possibly by the end of April.  The Iowa House is in negotiations with the Senate with budgets and other bills.  The House passed nine bills this week and was basically unanimous in favor on all of them.   ​One of the bills, Senate File 84, enhances the penalties for sexual exploitation of a minor and eliminates the possibility of a deferred judgement for these crimes.

State Auditor Rob Sand Urges Rural Communities to Apply for Energy/ERA Funding

State Auditor Rob Sand today urged leaders in Iowa’s rural communities to apply for funding from the Energy Improvements in Rural or Remote Areas (ERA) program. The program is designed to provide financial investment, technical assistance, and other resources to advance clean energy in communities with fewer than 10,000 people. “This can be an economic boost for places like my hometown,” said Auditor Sand.

The second major legislative deadline for bills has ended and now, week thirteen has too. This week has been spent working with the House on compromises in order to move forward with the Legislative session. On Monday the 3rd, we hosted FIRST at the Capitol. FIRST inspires young people to be innovators and leaders in robotics and technologies. Members of FIRST range from grades K-12.

Benton County Supervisors: Grand Jury, Replacing 1 employee with 2 and Taxes

The Benton County met on Tuesday for their weekly meeting.Barb Greenlee brought an exception application by Otto Nobis to build a pole building and it was approved. The director of Human Resources, Kirsten Nelson submitted her resignation effective on April 14. Supervisor, Rick Primmer, suggested not only keeping the recently created position but to double the staffing.

Construction on Hwy. 30 west of Cedar Rapids

If you’re driving on U.S. 30 in the Cedar Rapids area, the Iowa Department of Transportation is starting a project that may impact your route.Beginning on Monday, April 17 until mid-July, weather permitting, we’ll be working on the U.S. 30 bridge decks west of Interstate 380 near 6th Street SW. Traffic on both east- and westbound U.S. 30 will be reduced to one lane.
