Governor includes Benton County in Disaster Proclamation
Today, Gov. Kim Reynolds issued a disaster proclamation for nine additional counties in response to the March 5 severe weather. The governor's proclamation allows state resources to be utilized to respond to and recover from the effects of this severe weather in Adair, Benton, Decatur, Jasper, Lucas, Polk, Tama, Warren, and Wayne counties.

Benton County Conservation Wins Award for Excellence in Environmental Education
The Iowa Association of Naturalists (IAN) and the Iowa Conservation Education Coalition (ICEC) are proud to award Benton County Conservation and Iowa Education Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired with an IAN/ICEC Award for Excellence in Environmental Education. The award is the Sylvan Runkel Environmental Education School Award for Outstanding Whole-School Environmental Education Program.

Bill would allow police officers to search garbage without warrant
Iowa police officers would once again be allowed to search garbage cans without a warrant under a bill moving through the Iowa Legislature.Senate File 2296 says Iowans have “no reasonable expectation of privacy” for garbage cans that are placed outside of the home in a “publicly accessible area.” That means a peace officer could search through a person’s garbage can on the curb without needing a search warrant.
GOP TAX PLAN IS SETBACK FOR MOST IOWANS
Gov. Reynolds signed into law a tax plan (HF 2317) this week that will further line the pockets of the ultra-rich, while not doing enough for working Iowans. I voted against the plan because I believe in a fair tax system—not increased tax giveaways to corporations, millionaires and special interests. The tax plan rewards the extremely wealthy—not working Iowans and small businesses.

Governor Reynolds signs bill protecting girls’ sports in Iowa
Governor Kim Reynolds today signed HF 2416 into law protecting girls’ sports programs at all school levels, including high school and collegiate levels in Iowa. The bill allows participation in sports based upon the biological sex listed on the athlete’s birth certificate. “This is a victory for girls’ sports in Iowa. No amount of talent, training or effort can make up for the natural physical advantages males have over females.
