Council approves the naming of the new walking trail in honor of Nathan Hesson

At Thursday night's Council meeting, the City Council agreed with the suggestion of the Executive Board and the VPRD Board in the naming of the new walking trail. The boards agreed to recommend to the council that the trail should be named in honor of Nathan Hesson. Matt Boggess said of Nathan that he was one of the biggest supporters of the project along with his wife Ashley.

Shellsburg Public Library to open under "yellow" status

We are so excited to announce that the Shellsburg Library will be open again starting Wednesday January 27th at 10am! The library has determined to operate under “yellow” status". Yellow status means specific protocols we’d like everyone to be aware of: Library hours will remain the same as before. Patrons are encouraged to wear a mask and sanitize hands with provided sanitizer upon entry to the library.

Benton County Supervisors extend COVID rules days before Governor Removes them

At last week's Benton County Supervisor's Meeting, officials included the discussion on the COVID policy in the county. The discussion, however, was not made public. The Supervisors went into a closed session over some objections. County Attorney David Thompson felt that the discussion would fall under "security," but wasn’t able to cite which code at the time.

Reminder to taxpayers to file accurate returns; Choose a tax preparer carefully

The Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation Division (IRS-CI) and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa reminded taxpayers today to file accurate tax returns and choose a tax preparer wisely. The nation’s tax season starts on Friday, February 12, 2021, when the agency begins accepting and processing 2020 tax year returns.

Iowa Child Advocacy Board seeks Volunteers

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteers advocate to ensure the best interests and well-being for a child or sibling group once they enter the child welfare system. Each volunteer is specially appointed by a judge to advocate for a child, helping to ensure they are kept safe and their unique needs are met. The Benton, Marshall, Tama, Hardin, and Story CASA Programs are one of the local CASA programs in Iowa that recruits, screens and trains these volunteers.
