Hello District 75 from the State Capitol!

The legislators had another busy week under the golden dome, as the first funnel week ends on March 5th. We passed several important bills that will have an effect on almost everyone.One of the important ones passed unanimously is House File 562, which will establish more ways to fund Emergency Medical Services. This bill is very important in the rural areas where the closest EMS can be many miles and response time for emergencies can be critical.

Shellsburg Public Library News

The Shellsburg Library is open again.  The library has determined to operate under “yellow” status. Yellow status means specific protocols we’d like everyone to be aware of: Library hours will remain the same as before. Patrons are encouraged to wear a mask and sanitize hands with provided sanitizer upon entry to the library. 3 books and/or 3 DVD’s checked out per patron.

The seventh week of session was busier as many bills moved out of committee. Next week is the first funnel week of this legislative session, meaning all Senate policy bills need to be out of Senate committees in order to be considered for the rest of the year. This deadline ensures we are focusing on the bills with enough support to advance through the process.

Benton County Conservation Adjusts plans for derecho mulch

Benton County Conservation voted on Wednesday evening at a meeting held in conjunction with the Benton County Supervisors to abandon the project planning to bring wood chips to the property near the county home road.The original plan was to bring derecho damaged wood that had been chipped to the property, covering 6 acres of land at a depth of 6 feet deep.

Audit released for VSCSD

Hunt & Associates, P.C., Certified Public Accountants, released an audit report on Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District in Vinton, Iowa.The District's revenues totaled $23,959,019 for the year ended June 30, 2020, a .9 percent decrease from the prior year. Expenses for District operations totaled $23,093,514, a 4.1 percent increase from the prior year.
