COVID-19 Numbers

At this point, the state of Iowa does not have a law concerning the wearing of masks. Some have contacted me asking me to remind people that it is the law, when in fact it is not. The wearing of masks is an attempt to help curtail the spread of COVID-19. At this time, Benton County COVID numbers of active cases are lower than they were before the last peak at 46 cases currently.

8/11 SERVES AS REMINDER FOR IOWA RESIDENTS TO ALWAYS CONTACT 811 BEFORE DIGGING

Aug. 11 is almost here, and Iowa One Call hopes that the 8/11 date on the calendar will serve as a natural reminder for residents to call 811 prior to any digging project to have underground utility lines marked. With more people at home during pandemic restrictions, and summer a peak time to work on home improvement projects, it's more timely than ever that residents remember to dig safely.

Road Construction to close road between Vinton and County Road W26

A project to replace a deteriorated twin reinforced concrete box culvert located approximately 6 miles east of Vinton will begin on Thursday, August 6 on County Road E24. This road will be closed to through traffic between Vinton and County Road W26. There is a marked detour along IA Highway 150, US Highway 218 and County Roads E36 and W26. Work consists of removing the existing structure and constructing a new longer, twin reinforced concrete box culvert.

MAN ARRESTED ON DRUG AND ASSAULT CHARGES

On August 4th, 2020, at approximately 10:16 p.m., Vinton Police were dispatched to 1306 H Avenue in Vinton for a report of a fight in progress. Officers subsequently arrested Donald Arthur Kading, age 42, of Van Horne, for an assault that had injured another adult male. A search of Kading’s vehicle was conducted after a positive indication of the presence of drugs by the Vinton Police Department’s K-9, “Gino”.

Gov. Reynolds signs Executive Order to restore voting rights of felons

Today, Governor Kim Reynolds signed Executive Order 7, restoring the voting rights of thousands of Iowans who have completed their felony sentences.  "Today we take a significant step forward in acknowledging the importance of redemption, second chances and the need to address inequalities in our justice system,” said Gov. Reynolds. “The right to vote is the cornerstone of society and the free republic in which we live.

Chris Ward, City Administrator to take on Additional Responsibilities

City Administrator Chris Ward will assume the Interim City Clerk-Treasurer position on Aug. 11 Tuesday, August 4th, the Vinton City Council met in a special session to appoint an interim City Clerk. (the position is listed on Vinton Today here)Mayor, Bud Maynard stated that there was only one person that was currently qualified for the position and that was the City Administrator Chris Ward. As part of the job, Ward will receive a 15% pay increase until the position is filled which is according to the law.
