V-S 2020 Graduation plans finalized

At last night's school board meeting plans for graduation were discussed. Because of COVID restrictions, plans for a modified ceremony are in the works. Plan A is for Graduation to be held at the Karr Complex aka the football field. There is more room for social distancing and to meet any other requirements due to COVID-19. Plan B will go into effect in case of inclement weather.

Primary Election officially in the box, again

Benton County Auditor Hayley Rippel and Deputy Auditor Gina Edler conduct the Post Election Audit The Primary Election is officially over, and the post-election audit of the Eldorado-Newhall precinct completed. Following the election, one precinct is randomly [sel]ed by the Secretary of State to verify that the ballots are being correctly read by the ballot machines. The Auditor first swears in the audit board members before following procedures to open the sealed box of ballots.

Help kids in the community by donating books for babies to teens

On Saturday, June 13, 2020 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Bring new or gently used books to the Virginia Gay Hospital or any community library in the county.  Simply drive up to the drop off location and hand your books to the volunteers. Vinton-Shellsburg Continues to offer meal service to children

The Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District remains committed to doing all we can to meet the needs of our students and their families. One way we can do that is to offer FREE meals for children up to age 18.We will follow best practices for food distribution as outlined by the CDC. Gates to part with plants and flowers, wanting to help you grow your garden

For the next few weeks, Dave Gates will be saying goodbye to some of the things he's spent a lot of time raising, plants. He says that rather than just throwing everything away, he thought that maybe someone else might like some of the things.  Usually, Gates provides plants to the Master Gardener or Vinton Garden Club sales but of course, those won't be happening.

Primary Voting happening Today

Voting in this year’s primary is going to be so much different, or has been so different already. In the last Presidential primary election year around 300 absentee ballots had been sent out. This year nearly 3,400 had been sent out, more ballots than had voted in 2016. As of about 9:30 this morning 25 additional voters made their way to the skate center, right now there have been 48.

Shellsburg Library now Open

We are so excited to announce that the Shellsburg Library will be open again starting Monday, June 1 at 10am!The library has determined to operate under “yellow” status. Yellow status means specific protocols we’d like everyone to be aware of:Library hours will remain the same as before.Patrons are encouraged to wear a mask and sanitize hands with provided sanitizer upon entry to the library.

Americorp in Vinton to help alleviate food crisis across the state

Last week Governor Kim Reynolds announced that the state will be providing $3.5 million in funding to support projects like "Pass the Pork" food program. This program was organized to help farmers send their pigs to slaughter using local meat lockers rather than the processing plants which are having difficulty catching up with the backlog of hogs and other animals after recent closures.
