Santa Claus comes to the Courthouse

Seeking advice for flying on a foggy Christmas Eve Santa asks Scott Hansen for advice The Benton County Courthouse held its annual Christmas party last week. Jolly St Nick stopped in to visit with the employees and posed for pictures with the people responsible for keeping the county functioning throughout the year. With all kinds of goodies, including cookie for Santa the crew took few minutes, to enjoy the food and have a laugh with Santa.

The Polar Express arrives at Tilford Elementary

A Christmas tradition at Tilford Elementary took place last week as the Kindergarteners got to enjoy a pajama day before beginning their Christmas vacation. As part of the Christmas fun, the children wore their pajamas to school and watched slides of the Polar Express book which was read by their Principal Mr. Murray the conductor. 

Identity thieves captured thanks to car dealership

Ronnie Hill On 12-19-19, at about 3:44 PM, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a possible Identity Theft at Van Horn Motor Company on Hwy 30 near Newhall IA.  An employee reported that they had a customer trying to purchase a vehicle using a false Upon the arrival of the responding Deputy, a brief foot chase ensued, where suspect, Ronnie William Hill, age 32, from Cedar Rapids IA, fled from the Deputy and got into a white 2018 Chevrolet Cruze, driven by Torrance Terrett, age 29, from Chicago IL.

Kwik Star to begin construction in March

A representative of Kwik Star has confirmed that construction on the new store will begin in March of 2020. The company plans to have the new store completed by the end of August 2020.Kwik Star will be located next to Theisen's along Hwy 218 and 13th St.

Area Kiwanis Club gives back to area children

Several area children received gifts from the Kiwanis Division of Santa's Workshop The Vinton Kiwanis Club, and Santa wowed a group of area children on Tuesday. Following lunch at Pizza Ranch, the group, er, Santa handed out gifts to several area children. Lighting up the faces of little boys with remote-controlled cars, and little girls with dolls and makeup kits, the group, brought many smiles and laughter to the children.The group works behind the scenes of the community participating in several events to raise money so that they can turn around and hold events like this.

Benton County Sheriff's Department responds to Vehicle Accident, one fatality

ON 12-17-19, AT ABOUT 3:51 PM, THE BENTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE RESPONDED TO A REPORT OF A MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT ON COUNTY ROAD V37, NORTH OF DYSART IA, IN BENTON COUNTY. A NORTHBOUND 2008 TOYOTA COROLLA, LOST CONTROL AND LEFT THE ROADWAY STRIKING AN EMBANKMENT. THE TOYOTA WAS DRIVEN BY PATRICIA VALDOVINOS, AGE 20, FROM WATERLOO IA AND THE DRIVER WAS THE SOLE OCCUPANT.
