Three escape electrical fire in rural Vinton

Three females escaped an electrical fire caused in a laundry room Sunday evening southeast of Vinton. The Vinton, Shellsburg and Urbana fire departments responded to the Goersch residence on 60th Street Lane, where an electrical malfunction with a dryer and/or its wiring filled the home with smoke. Neighbors who were helping the family with household items on Monday morning said all three women are fine, but a cat is believed to have perished in the smoke.

VPRD seeks public input and ideas with survey on city parks

The Vinton Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with its VintonPlays fund drive for a new splash pad and playground for Riverside Park, is seeking a long-term plan for all of Vinton's parks and nature areas. Part of that plan is seeing what Vinton area residents like about city park facilities, how they think the VPRD can improve them, and what facilities they would like to see Vinton add.

Benton Soil & Water Conservation to meet, Wed, Oct. 18

The next regular meeting of the Benton Soil and Water Conservation District Commissioners will be held on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. at the District Office, 1705 West D Street in Vinton. Agenda items include: approval of minutes from previous meetings, public participation, approval of treasurer's report and bills, approval of conservation plans, watershed reports, state cost-share programs, an update on NRCS activities, a review of the correspondence file, any other commissioner input or other business, and scheduling of the next meeting.

Senior Cole Tharp let the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings cross country team with an 11th place finish in the WaMaC Conference meet on Thursday in Vinton. Vikette junio Libbie Timmerman led the Vikettes. The 16 conference schools each take a turn hosting the large meet; it was VS's turn this year.

Herring update: Continued support keeps historic Belle Plaine hotel project going

The Herring Hotel Friends continue working hard to restore the historic challenge, and to make repairs to the building in downtown Belle Plaine. To celebrate recent achievements, there will be an Open Lobby Day on Saturday, at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at the hotel. "Our growth has been possible because of the growing support within our community, county and state," says Kristine Pope.

For the second-graders participating in the sessions for the final time, Fire Prevention Week means a tour of the Vinton Fire Station.

NORTH EDEN WILLING WORKERS HELPING TEXAS HURRICANE VICTIMS

Each year the North Eden Willing Workers 4-H Club does a community service project. This year it only seemed fitting to help out the victims of the recent hurricanes. The members recently pitched in money to send gift cards to Dickinson, Texas which is just outside Houston, Texas. About 80% of the homes in Dickinson were affected by flood waters. They have joined up with a family with ties to Iowa who will distribute the gift cards in Dickinson.
