Summer weather is here and that means that people of all ages are itching to get outside! On a quest to deliver fresh outdoor recreational opportunities to the community, the Vinton Parks & Recreation Department is in the process of developing a multi-use nature trail system that will utilize approximately fifty acres of timbered city property just north of the sledding hill at Riverside Park.

Please join members of the 2016 Post-Prom Com for a transition meeting at Celebration Park at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13. The upcoming Senior class parents that were on the post prom committee for 2016 will hand over all of the information, financials, etc.

“The weather was wonderful and so were the people. All events were well attended and supported," said Steve Meyer, as he described the annual Garrison Fun Day.
"It was a great day for Benton County Breast Cancer Survivors, Garrison Emergency Services, area children and the citizens of our community. We thank everyone who participated and supported us," said Meyer.

The Vinton-Shellsburg High School roll-out of computers will be different this year. All registered students entering grades 9-12 at VSHS will continue to get a computer for the 2016-17 school year. Vinton-Shellsburg summer school students have been meeting for class each Tuesday and Thursday, and will continue throughout July. On Wednesday, they took a field trip to the Children's Museum in Iowa City.
"There were lots of different areas for the kids to get hands-on experiences," said teacher Deb Garbers. "There was a grocery store, hospital, Lego room, an airplane area with a hot air balloon, a climbing wall and more.

The Tilford cafeteria was bustling this morning, as Summer School participants gathered for breakfast before leaving on a field trip to the Children's Museum in Iowa City.
While many of the summer school students have breakfast and/or lunch at school, very few others have participated in the free program.
To help busy parents, and those who may be struggling with food security, the Vinton-Shellsburg School District is offering a new, free summer breakfast and lunch program.

Several area residents plan to take turns reading the Bible outside the Benton Courthouse from Thursday through Sunday, and they invite others to join them.
The gathering is a response to the call from Gov. Terry Branstad for Bible reading at Iowa courthouses in June and July.

Ervin Motor Co. has donated an AED (automated external defibrillator) training system to Vinton Shellsburg Community School District as part of a National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation Program.
The Little Anne AED Training System was given to Vinton Shellsburg Community School District District Nurse Kris Hallberg by Ervin Motor Co.
BETHLEHEM LUTHERAN CHURCH - June 27th, 2016 8:03 pm

On June 26, 2016 Bethlehem Lutheran Church presented a gift of $103 to the Vinton Feeds the World, food packaging event.
On September 11th, in conjunction with Outreach, Inc., Bethlehem Lutheran Church will be having a food packaging event at the Vinton Skate Center at 1pm. During this event, we hope to package 50,000 meals to be distributed locally and internationally.

Thirty four high school students from across Iowa traveled to Washington, D.C. on June 10-16 to join more than 1,600 other students from around the nation for the 2016 Electric Cooperative Youth Tour. The Electric Cooperative Youth Tour has been giving high school students the opportunity to tour Washington, D.C. for over 50 years.
