It will be easy for Heidi Kersten to remember the date she stood at Riverside Park and heard VPRD Director Brad Barker recite the history of the Kersten Christmas lights.
“This is the 14th anniversary of my mother’s death,” said Heidi, after receiving a plaque from Barker on Saturday, June 25. “I think she would be proud.

Tragedy has struck a Vinton family which was already mourning the loss of its matriarch.
Ken Neve was returning home from Vinton to Colorado, after the funeral of his mother, Rosie Neve, when he was killed in an accident on Saturday on Interstate 80 near North Platte, Neb. A SUV crossed the median and collided with Neve's sedan, killing him and injuring his wife, Deseire.

The Vinton Police Department is investigating a vehicle/pedestrian collision that injured a 6 year old child in the area of West 3rd St. and Hwy. 218. in Vinton at around 3:00 p.m. on Friday June 24, 2016.
The vehicle involved was reportedly a silver Chevrolet pickup with a dual real wheels that was pulling a white enclosed trailer southbound on Hwy 218.

The Farmers Savings Bank parking lot and courthouse lawn were filled on Thursday with youngsters and their families who gathered to begin the annual Party in the Park celebration.
After the traditional hot dog supper in the bank parking lot, the children biked, skated or rode other small vehicles to the courthouse, where activities and music were waiting.

The aisles of the 4th Annual Evergreen Cemetery Flea Market, as well as neighboring streets, are full today for the first day of the two-day event.
Sales began at 8 a.m. and will continue until 5 p.m. today, with the same hours tomorrow.
Among the booths are one for the Sheriff Fry Memorial and the AMVETS, which are offering food and drink items for a free-will offering.

Those attending the recent Memorial Day ceremony at Veterans Park in Vinton may have noticed two new memorials – one for all Korean War Veterans and a small plaque honoring the Medal of Honor recipient who was born in Vinton.
VFW and AMVETS member Ron Geiger, who lives across the street from the park, has been working with his wife, Carol, and other veterans on adding memorials to the park for a few years.

The Benton County Conservation Board is pleased to announce the hiring of Karen Phelps as the Executive Director of Benton County Conservation (BCC). She will officially start this position July 1, 2016. Karen began serving BCC in 2002 as Director’s Assistant/Naturalist and within a short time became a full-time Naturalist. She was the integral piece in creating the existing Naturalist program that is in place today.

Jerry and Julia Meadows of Vinton were in Maryland following the funeral of Jerry's brother, when their home was mostly destroyed by a fire overnight on East 13th Street in Vinton.
Fire Chief Gary McKenna said the cause is most likely lightning, although investigators will sort through the damaged home looking for more clues.
McKenna said the house has heavy fire and water damage and is most likely a total loss, along with most of the contents.

They were kids when I first knew them, the three youngest men who received Quilts of Valor at a special service on Saturday in Cedar Rapids.
We knew their parents when the boys were young; we shared and saw some of the interesting and relatively very minor challenges of raising kids.
One of the guys was the ring bearer in our wedding; his mom is one of my wife’s best friends.
