Lions to have new concession trailer for Party in the Park

2016 Party in the Park Competition Schedule

2016 Party in the Park Competitions Vinton’s upcoming ‘Party in the Park’ three-day festival is a perfect opportunity for families and people of all ages to relax, play games, eat some amazing food and enjoy some great entertainment. It also provides a chance to enjoy some friendly competition with others in a wide array of sporting (and eating) events! Friday, June 24 / Riverside Park - At 6:00 PM, the Party in Pink 5K Walk/Run will begin at the Riverside Park area located across from Virginia Gay Hospital.

The City of Lights: Heidi Kersten named Party in the Park Grand Marshal

Party in the Park turns 25 this week and we hope that you can join us in Celebrating the City of Lights! When residents and visitors alike think about the lights of Vinton, many immediately will conjure up images of their childhood or current family traditions that involve an annual trip to visit the Kersten Christmas Lighted display just outside of town.

Howes-Vonstein, Hoepner and Lane named Kiddie Parade Junior Grand Marshals

Emily Howes-Vonstein Recent VSHS graduates Emily Howes-Vonstein and Hannah Hoepner, along with soon-to-be Junior Jenna Lane have been selected as the 2016 Party in the Park Junior Grand Marshals. They will begin the weekend's festivities by leading the Kid's Parade through downtown Vinton on Thursday evening at 6:30 PM. "Emily, Hannah and Jenna were selected by the Party in the Park planning committee for their active roles within the community and their dedication to helping out others," VPRD Director Brad Barker said.

Chapter Officer Leadership Training: VS FFA leaders learn skills

On May 7th, 2016, the 2016-2017 Vinton-Shellsburg FFA officer team was installed. All of the offices are highly important to the chapter and it’s members and each officer is required to attend COLT, Chapter Officer Leadership Training, in order to be sure that they all know what is expected of them as an officer. This year the training was held on June 8th at Hawkeye Community College.

SACG golf fund-raiser a success, again

A huge thank you to all those who supported the 5th Annual Shellsburg Area Community Group’s Golf Tournament and Fund Raiser on June 11th. We are thankful to the many area businesses who purchased hole sponsorships and who provided silent auction and raffle prizes! Our appreciation also goes to those SACG members who contributed their time and effort to manage the event, and of course the many golfers! The staff at Wildcat Golf Course did, as usual, an excellent job of hosting this very successful event.

River Celebration: Water lovers gather for unveiling of historical display

Don Eells and Bob LaGrange were among the first to see the unveiled Cedar River display Friday. River enthusiasts, local artists and the committee which worked for more than a year to document the history of the Cedar River gathered at Celebration Park for the unveiling of the new display on Friday evening. The display includes a variety of history and other lessons about the portion of the Red Cedar River that winds through Benton County.

VGH Clinic construction progress update June 17th

The first highly-visible signs of progress are evident at Virginia Gay. The lead-lined building once used for imaging services has been removed and the bank has been excavated where the new clinic will go. Look forward to more updates as construction progresses. The new clinic will provide additional space and improved patient privacy.

Cedar River project celebration -TONIGHT- to include frog-judging contest

The unveiling of the 72-foot-long Cedar River lithograph will take place on Friday, June 17, at Celebration Park near the Highway 150 bridge, and residents are encouraged to bring their best frog or other river creature for a frog judging contest. The display will feature historical landmarks along the Cedar River through Benton County, along with other information about the river.

Belle Plaine woman seeking name of anonymous person who returned lost portfolio

Wendy Schwab of Belle Plaine was traveling through Vinton on her motorcycle when she realized that her 5x7-inch zippered portfolio had fallen from her sidebag. She and friends stopped to search for it, then reported it missing to the Benton County Sheriff's office.  This happened at around 10 a.m. on Thursday. By 1 p.m., Schwab had the portfolio, and all of its contents, back in her hands.
