Vinton Community Wellness Center Update

A local committee is currently researching the idea of a Community Wellness Center for public use in Vinton. The intent and purpose of this committee is to explore the possibility of a community wellness center which could provide an improved fitness, health, youth sports, and family facility that encompasses our community fitness and social needs.

Vinton's newest Marine earned Sharpshooter status at basic training

Kaylee Graves of Vinton completed Marine basic training with Sharpshooter status. “Marines are the best.” That advice from Kaylee Graves’ aunt Aimee Redlinger was a big factor in Graves’ decision to join the Marines instead of the Navy. After the death of her cousin, Emma Redlinger, Graves, who graduated early this year from Vinton-Shellsburg, decided to join the military. She had considered the Navy before her conversation with Aimee.

'Pluggers:' Janet Woodhouse is latest Vinton contributor to comic

Janet Woodhouse of Vinton offered an idea which became a cartoon published throughout the U.S. The one-square "Pluggers" comic is a favorite among Americans, especially among those of us who were born before the first Super Bowl. The characters in that comic express the uniquely old-school way of life and doing things. The artists of the June 15 edition of "Pluggers" used an idea from Janet Woodhouse of Vinton.  At least two other Vinton women have shared ideas that have been featured in the comic.

Donate Glasses and Change a Life

Imagine if you could help a child read, an adult succeed in his/her job, or a senior maintain independence. In just about any home, one can find a pair of eyeglasses that are no longer being used. That same pair of eyeglasses can change another person’s life. During the month of June at the Party in the Park events the Vinton Lion’s Club will be collecting used prescription eyeglasses and prescription and non-prescription sunglasses as part of a unique recycling program.

Class Acts: Three at VSHS honored for helping younger students

School Board Pres. Sue Gates presented Hannah Hoepner and Emily Howes-Vonstein Class Act Awards. The Vinton-Shellsburg School Board honored three high school students for volunteering much of their time to help younger students.  Two recent graduates, Hannah Hoepner and Emily Howes-Vonstein received the VS Class Act Award during Monday's board meeting for their work with Operation Backpack; Seth Patterson received the same honor for his many hours of working and running with middle school cross country runner Sage Holmes.

Racers, fans remember Urbana 5, continue organ donor awareness efforts

The Urbana 5/Iowa Donor Network brought many to the Benton County Speedway on Sunday. After seeing 100 or so race fans sign up for the Iowa Donor Registry at last year’s Urbana 5/Iowa Donor Network race night, Tia Tuttle was curious about how many more people would sign up at this year’s event, held Sunday at Benton County Speedway in Vinton. But it turns out that last year’s event and the ongoing efforts to raise awareness of organ and tissue donation have been so successful that only one previous non-donor signed up on Sunday.

VS Band trip progresses 'as usual' in Orlando, 30 minute from tragic shooting

VSHS band and choir students continue their Orlando/Disney World trip as planned. It was somber on the busses carrying Vinton-Shellsburg High School Marching Band and Choir members upon the group's arrival in Orlando, Florida, for the long-anticipated trip to Disney World. "Overall, the mood is good," said VS parent and chaperone Randy Scheel. "However flags are all half mast. The story is dominating all the news outlets.

VS alum Ben Hyland to be among first U of I students to visit Cuba

Ben Hyland will visit Cuba as part of a U of I service trip next week. Given the choice between Romania and Cuba, Ben Hyland chose to become one of the first American students to visit the island nation since normalization of U.S/Cuba diplomacy.  Hyland, the son of Pat and Laurie Hyland, is one of two University of Iowa students leaving next week for a two-week service trip. Hyland majors in business economics and said he chose Cuba because of the opportunity to be among the first current U.

Friday fire leaves family of eight homeless

A Vinton family is safe but homeless after a Friday apartment fire.  A Vinton family of eight is homeless this morning after a fire at their apartment Friday night. Cheryl Wheeler and Michael Parker and their six children, all younger than 12, were home in their apartment at 1603 First Street West (Park Apartments) when the fire broke out. The children escaped safely but the adults were taken to Virginia Gay Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Party-In-Pink Reminder!!

Start of the 2015 race Sunday, June 12th is the last day to register and receive your T-shirt for supporting the cause. Registrations will be received as late as the day of the race, but T-shirts will not be available to those registrants.
