100+3 Bethlehem Lutheran donates to Vinton Lutheran Home

At the Sunday worship service on May 29, 2016, Bethlehem Lutheran Church presented the May 2016 gift of $103.00 to the Vinton Lutheran Home. The Lutheran Home strives to come up with new ideas and are dedicated to provide their residents with an enhanced quality of life and a quality Christian Care.   Accepting the gift at this service was Kelli Van Ree, the Administrator for the Vinton Lutheran Home.

Information collected at public input gathering events conducted earlier this spring will be incorporated into a conceptual transportation and landscape enhancement plan.

Council to revisit golf cart ordinance after historic veto by Mayor Watson

Mayor John Watson seems to have made history last week, when he vetoed the golf cart ordinance which the Vinton City Council had approved at the previous meeting. It is the first time anyone can recall a Watson veto. Watson told the city council at its last meeting that he had heard many comments from local residents about the new ordinance – none of them favorable.

Vinton Clinic ground breaking Friday June 10 at 12:30 PM

Part of the clinic parking space is now closed off Ground breaking for the new clinic construction at Virginia Gay will be Friday, June 10th, at 12:30 PM. The public is invited. The total project cost is estimated to be $5.5 million. The Virginia Gay Healthcare Foundation's campaign has resulted in pledges, donations and support from the Foundation of $1.2 million.  With commencement of the project, valet parking is now available for the clinic as well as the hospital.

Local drone photographer to continue hobby after graduation

Normally mounted on a drone, Brendan Turner's camera helped him capture graduation moments. For the past two years, Brendan Turner has offered Vinton residents a unique viewpoint of the city and its activities. His drone-mounted camera has captured sunsets, football games, RAGBRAI and other moments. He took one of the very first photos of the new football field when it was completed last summer.  Brendan's most recent photo, however, was from a much lower altitude.

Man arrested for burglary, willful injury after Sunday incident in Vinton

Roger Hartman: Arrested for burglary, willful injury Sunday in Vinton. On Sunday, May 29, 2016, at approximately 4:22 p.m., law enforcement and EMS units were dispatched to 211 E. 4th Street in Vinton for a report of a disturbance involving an intoxicated person breaking windows. Upon arrival, a 37 year-old female was identified as the intended victim of an assault and was found suffering from apparent serious injuries primarily on and about her head.

Class of 2016 says farewell to VSHS

VSHS Graduates Katie Isbell and Daisy Johnson enter the gym during 'Pomp and Circumstance.' The Class of 2016 is a family, said graduate Celia Turner. Turner, who gave the student address during commencement on Sunday afternoon, recalled her days as a reluctant newcomer to Vinton-Shellsburg as a middle school student, but also recalled how every group of students treated others well.  It was during their senior year, said Turner, that the Class of 2016 became even more like a family, as they shared experiences like homecoming painting traditions.

IPA members learn rocket building, prepare for Boomtown and contests at Bar-Y

Rocket building and firing was a part of IPA's meeting at the Yedlik farm this weekend. When 6-year-old Brooklyn Meling participates in Show-And-Tell this week at her elementary school in Ankeny, her classmates will hear an incredible claim about the weekend she spent in Vinton: “I made a rocket, and fired it into the sky.” Brooklyn has the photos to prove that she did exactly that over the weekend, as she and her parents, Beau and Stephanie, spent their first weekend at Chuck Yedlik’s Bar-Y Ranch with scores of other IPA members.
