FFA members discuss program at 8th grade orientation
On February 23rd, 2016 the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter had the opportunity to set up their own booth at the 8th Grade Orientation Night at the Vinton-Shellsburg High School.
To recruit members, the chapter brought in a bearded dragon, chickens, and a rabbit to grab the attention of 8th graders and then as the students came up to pet the animals, they also had the opportunity to learn more about agricultural classes and the National FFA Organization.
Sub-Districts: VS FFA members do well in many categories
On February 24th, 2016 the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter went to Hawkeye Community College for Sub-District Convention. 23 members decided to go to this convention to compete in different Leadership CDEs. All of the members did fantastic at Sub-Districts, with one group even advancing to District Convention, held on March 12th. The results are
'Rex's Exes:' ACT 1 'Cake War' series continues on Palace stage
The ACT 1 cast and crew of "Rex's Exes" are preparing to open their sequel to "Red Velvet Cake Wars" this Thursday night on the Palace stage.
Many of the performers return to play their same roles in the sequel, which focuses on the bizarre characters of the Verdeen family and their latest shenanigans.
In "Rex's Exes," Peaches (played by Mandy Barker) continues to be haunted by Rex's memory, and eventually learns why Rex disappeared, and also finds out more troubling things about his past.
Mother of the Year: Barb Wittmer
An area woman has been recognized as the Iowa Woman of the Year by the American Mothers, the organization that Eleanor Roosevelt and Mamie Eisenhower began to promote mother day and improve the lives of mothers and children throughout the world.
Barbara was born in Wheeling West Virginia on January 27th 1937. Her father was a salesman so the family moved a lot.
How you can help the Vinton Police Department K-9 Officer Fund
The Vinton Police Department has initiated a K-9 Officer Fundraising Campaign. The Vinton Police Department is adding a K-9 Officer to assist in the effort of combatting crime in Vinton and the surrounding communities. Having a K-9 Officer creates a valuable asset to Law Enforcement Officers, who are working diligently to protect the citizens of this community.
100 + 3: Bethlehem Lutheran donates to Retrieving Freedom K-9 program
Retrieving Freedom is a non-profit organization located in Waverly Iowa. The organization provides
service dogs to children with autism and to military veterans who return home with no visible physical injuries but intense PTSD.
Service dogs interacting with autistic children become a social bridge for these children, often helping even non-verbal children begin forms of verbal conversation.
Benton County Dairy Producers seek candidates for Royalty
The Benton County Dairy Producers are seeking youth in the dairy community for county dairy royalty.

Fund-raising under way for Vinton Police Department's first K-9 unit
The Vinton Police Department has received verbal promises of nearly $8,000 in donations for its very first K-9 officer project.
Police Chief Ted Paxton and Officer Ben Parmater discussed the police dog project with the Vinton City Council during its meeting on Thursday.
The department hopes to complete fund-raising in the near future and have the dog in service by the fall of this year.
Council hears plans for new housing development south of VSHS; cost study next
South of Vinton-Shellsburg High School, between 2nd Avenue and Highway 218, Dusty Druschel envisions a housing development that up to 70 families will eventually call home.
Work could begin as soon as this year.
The first step toward this vision took place Thursday when Druschel and Vinton Unlimited Business Opportunity Group (BOG) member Rich Hainstock asked the Vinton Council to fund a study of the cost of infrastructure required for such a development.
Concert surprise: Underwood thanks local natives for military service
