100th day of class: Elementary students celebrate, study the number
Tilford first grade students marked the 100th day of school with a variety of lessons about the number 100. They dressed up as they thought a 100-year-old might dress, filled bags with 100 crackers, candies, and other items to demonstrate what 100 looks like, and colored crowns.

Students to visit Veteran's Museum with local veterans by their side
The Vinton Shellsburg Community School Foundation is lending it's support to a high school field trip to Waterloo's Veterans' Museum on February 8th and we're asking for your help. Two wheels & four legs: Vinton PD seeks to add K-9, bike patrols
Vinton Police Chief Ted Paxton updated the Vinton City Council on two new programs he hopes to put in place this year.
The Chief said during the council meeting that the department will present information to the council about the police dog program during its Feb. 25 meeting.
“We have an officer who has prepared a Power Point presentation,” Paxton said.
Senator Ernst to visit Virginia Gay Hospital
Senator Joni Ernst will visit Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton to meet with staff and administration on Friday, February 5th. We appreciate Senator Ernst’s interest in improving access to mental health care services and learning more about Virginia Gay’s effort to include mental health in primary medical care delivery.

VS fund-raisers seek to replace old graduation gowns with real choir robes
For the past 30 years or more, Vinton-Shellsburg High School choir members have been performing while wearing graduation gowns instead of actual choir robes.
A new fund-raising effort by the Fine Arts Century Club (FACC) hopes to change that in time for the large group contest in May.
“A choir robe can be considered much like a uniform that a band member or a basketball player would wear,” said LuAnn Urlaub, a member of the FACC.
Brown obtains permission to operate Red Shed Auto Repair, but at a price
Dean Brown made Benton County history on Wednesday, becoming the first person to ever successfully appeal a land use change rejection vote.
But the decision which finally lets him run Red Shed Auto Repair from the shop he built on his homestead north of Vinton came at a cost: $500 for the original land use application fee, $500 for the appeal fee, and approximately $500 he agreed to pay each year to the only neighbors who opposed him to cover one-third of their dust control bill.
Lions Club hears from food pantry and Boy Scouts
Vinton Lions Club members have enjoyed two great programs in the past two weeks. On January 13th the group heard from the Benton County Food Pantry and on January 20th it was the Vinton Boy Scouts Troop 47 celebrating 83 years of the Vinton Lions Club serving as the local troop’s chartering organization.

Board of Adjustment to consider appeal for Red Door Auto Repair on Wednesday
For they meet on Wednesday for the first time in over a decade, the five-member volunteer Benton County Board of Adjustment will determine the future of an auto repair shop in rural Vinton.
Benton County Supervisors Terry Hertle and Donald Frese rejected Dean Brown's request for a land use change for his home at 2374 55th Street in November.
Pulsera project: VSHS students selling art made by Central America teens
A table in the Vinton-Shellsburg High School cafeteria was filled with bright bracelets on Friday, with many ladies and young girls gathering around to admire the colors and craftsmanship.
Each of the bracelets, or pulseras – the Spanish word for bracelet – was made by an young artist in Central America, said student Lindsey Miller.
8 Shellsburg Elementary Students to participate in Festival on Friday
Eight Shellsburg Elementary fifth grade students will be participating in the East Central Iowa Choral Director’s Association Honor Choir Festival this Friday. The ECICDA 5th & 6th Grade Honor Choir will be held on Friday, January 29 at Sinclair Auditorium on the Coe College campus in Cedar Rapids. A day of rehearsal will culminate in an evening concert at 7:00 pm.
