Vikettes win dual at CPU; Tandy leads all golfers with 41

The Vikettes ended their dual season with a win at CPU. Senior Lauren Tandy led the V-S girls golf team to a dual victory at Center Point-Urbana on Tuesday. Little Viking Invitational: 7th, 8th grade boys teams finish second

Payton Haefner helped the 8th grade shuttle hurdle relay team to victory Tuesday. Both the Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School 7th and 8th grade teams finished second in the annual Little Viking Invitational Tuesday at the Karr Athletic Complex. Winners included: 7th grade Brooks Erickson, 100M and 200M David Lapan-Islas, 800M and 1600M 8th grade Dillon Sunlin, 200M Charlie Dudley, 100M Hurdles and 200M Hurdles 400M Shuttle Hurdle Relay Team See complete results HERE.

Teaching the Next Generation: Ag Day shows importance Of Ag

Our yearly 3rd grade Ag Day took place on Wednesday, April 27. The day was filled with many different activities to get the students involved and interested in learning about agriculture. The areas that the students were taught about included beef, dairy, swine, horse, poultry, rabbit, sheep and goats, corn and soybeans, and equipment safety. The Vinton-Shellsburg, Benton Community, and Belle Plaine FFA Chapters have members sign-up for different student teaching areas.

Supreme Champs: VS FFA wins first at Iowa Convention

The VS FFA has been named the Supreme Chapter in the State of Iowa, and will be honored at the National FFA Convention in the fall. Below is a summary of the state convention:  On April 17th, 2016 the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter members geared up for a trip to Ames to go to the 88th Iowa FFA Convention! The Chapter Exhibit team left early to set up their exhibit in the Hilton Coliseum at Iowa State University.

Post-Prom thanks community, AmeriCorps for successful event

Prom Royalty: Lily Horst and Grant Noren at Post Prom. The annual Vinton-Shellsburg Post Prom was a big success again, as the VSHS gym, cafeteria and auditorium were full of students, parents and volunteers enjoying a variety of food and activities. The Post Prom Committee began work shortly after the 2015 Prom, as parents of juniors served on various committees. One new fund-raiser this year was the organizing of ushers for home University of Iowa football games.

Magic Lantern: Historic theater equipment demonstrated at Palace

A small crowd of area residents learned about some of the oldest cinematic technology in history from a man who is involved in a Guiness Book of World Records project. Michael Zahs, a retired teacher from the Washington, Iowa, area, brought a magic lantern and slides to the Vinton Palace for the “Music and Magic Lanterns” event. Accompanied by the Red Cedar Chamber musicians, Zahs demonstrated a still-working electric magic lantern from 1913 – with its original bulb.

3rd Grade Ag Day: Students, presenters brave cold rain for farm lessons

Umbrellas, jackets and hats helped 3rd graders fight the cold rain during Ag Day. Although it was not listed on the program, the impact of weather on farming was an important lesson during the annual Third Grade Ag Day sponsored by the Benton County Extension Office with help from many local organizations. The weather was much colder than normal, with temperatures in the low 40s, along with rain and wind during much of the day.

Committee seeks to honor memory of slain Sheriff Leland Fry

This drawing depicts a bust of Sheriff Leland Fry that may soon be on display outside courthouse. A 78-year-old scrapbook contains a lifetime of tributes to one of the Benton County lawmen who died in the line of duty. Now a group of local residents is working to make sure the story of Sheriff Leland “Sam” Fry lives on in local history. Fry was just about to face election for his second term in office, when he went to a house where a man who had fled from his office was reportedly hiding.
