How did we get here? Well, it's all Thanks to You!

Asking for your financial help is always the time of year that we dislike the most. We love covering stories in the area, celebrating the big steps made in our community, and lending a hand were we can to get word out, but the one thing we hate to do every year is to ask for money. Fortunately, when we signed on to this gig, we didn't realize that this would be one aspect of the job.

Eastern Iowa Honor Flight # 23 - Monday April 18, 2016‏

Our first flight this year goes one week from tomorrow on Monday, 18, April 2016.  This will be our 23rd flight since we were founded.   There are a total of 87 Veterans on the flight consisting of a  mix of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam Era Veterans.   We leave CR at 6:30 AM and will return (barring any delays) at approximately 10:05 PM.

VSHS speech students fill Palace stage with humor, drama, music

Choral Reading: VSHS Speech group honors Shakespeare during Palace performance of 'Will Power.' From a Choral Reading tribute to William Shakespeare called "Will Power," to humorous exerpts from "Shrek the Musical" to "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" to serious prose and poetry about cancer, teen suicide, sexual abuse and the role of women in society, the Vinton-Shellsburg High School Speech students earned high marks from judges.

Party-In-Pink 5k online registration now available

Not everyone has to run fast Registration is open for Party-In-Pink's fourth annual 5k run/walk to be held on Friday, June 24th in support of Virgnia Gay Hospital and Clinics Gifts of Hope campaign. Runners and walkers can register online at http://bit.ly/partyinpink2016 Virginia Gay supports patients in financial need through the Gifts of Hope program. Gifts of Hope helps pay for appointments, testing, and up to $2500 for treatment for breast cancer and other women’s services like pelvic exams.

FFA Labor Auction tradition continues; chapter raises $10,800

Duane Johnson prepares to begin the bidding for FFA member Isaac Wiley. The Vinton-Shellsburg FFA continued its half-century of working with local farmers, businesses and service organizations via the Labor Auction. A total of 34 FFA members took their turn standing at the auction block, as long-time caller Duane Johnson took bids.  Familiar with many of the farm families represented in the room, Johnson shared stories with the students about family members he has remembered throughout the years.

Missing are the sensationalized stories concerning our friends or neighbors whose lives have been turned upside down by one tragic event or another. Missing too are stories that aren’t accurate because we are more concerned about being fast than we are about being accurate (no, we’re not perfect, but our errors are from being human, not hasty.

Purse-A-Palooza now underway!

The staff at Virginia Gay’s Vinton Family Medical Clinic is holding its second-annual Purse-A-Palooze silent auction. This year the proceeds will be given given to the Virginia Gay Hospital Healthcare Foundation for their capital campaign. In most years the proceeds of events like these are used to purchase new equipment for the nurses, doctors, and other healthcare providers.
