Supervisors unanimously vote in favor of Coots sand pit on 24th Ave. Dr.

After spending four hours in two separate meetings on the issue, the Benton County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to approve a land use change request that will allow Coots Materials, Inc., to create and operate a sand pit on 24th Avenue Drive north of Vinton. Residents who live near the site on the gravel road shared several concerns; many of them had met before the first hearing to discuss their fears.

100+3: Bethlehem Lutheran helps with VGH Medical Clinic Expansion Project

George Bauer presents a check for $103 to Mike Timmermans of the VGH Foundation. Very soon, the Virginia Gay Family Medical Clinic Expansion Project will begin. The estimated total project cost will be $5.5 million dollars, with $4.5 million dollars coming from VGH Operations and $1 million from Community Support.  The new clinic will be 2 stories and comprise 18,500 square feet of floor space (compared to the existing clinic which occupies 8,300 square feet.

Volunteers needed for Post-Prom set up Friday

Calling All Post Prom Volunteers!!!   Set up for Post Prom is on April 29th from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM at the high school. Those that signed up to volunteer the first half of Post Prom on Saturday, April 30th need to be at the high school at 11:00 PM. This is just a quick reminder, that Vinton Today is in the midst of our annual fundraiser. For those of you that might have missed it, this year we are taking on a huge project and recreating the Vinton Today website. We, and those that created the website, feel that we need to update our system before it becomes obsolete, leaving you without a clue about what's happening in and around Vinton! We need EVERYONE to pitch in this year and do what you can to help us out.

Work continues on Garrison area transportation enhancement study

On March 12, Garrison residents participated in a focus group workshop as part of the Iowa’s Living Roadways Community Visioning Program. The focus groups are part of an input-gathering process underway to identify transportation needs and opportunities for enhancements in Garrison. During the focus groups, participants identified on a map places where traveling around Garrison is difficult, as well as areas that are considered assets.

In Memory of JR Clapp: Scouts, friends and teachers continue tributes

JR Clapp loved his fedora. After she heard of the death of JR Clapp, elementary art teacher Lindsey Otto remembered a special photo she had taken of the Shellsburg fifth grader a while ago. JR and some of his friends had decided to honor her as “Art Queen.” They gave her a crown and a WWE-style championship belt representing that status. “That was so sweet, kind, fun and totally typical of JR,” said Mrs.

Vinton Today, Celebrating Earth Day...doing our part to be green

For Earth Day, the question was posed, "How many trees were saved by Vinton Today being online?" And having been in the newspaper business, we took it further. How many tires, and oil and cars and man hours were saved by Vinton Today? The short answer, we have no idea. The long answer...various sources estimate that 500,000 trees are used just to print the Sunday paper,   You know, the one with all the flyers, and coupons and the one you buy just for that.

Central Lutheran students learn about guide dogs from Vinton family

Matt and Amy Salger discuss the guide dog program during a visit to Central Lutheran. Marsala continues to gain fans and friends throughout the area. The 2-year-old black lab, who is the guide dog for Amy Salger, joined Amy and husband Matt during a visit to Central Lutheran School in Newhall on Wednesday.  Matt and Amy shared Marsala's history with the students there, and Amy and Marsala demonstrated how the dog helps Amy find her way around rooms and buildings.

FFA members thank community for labor auction success

On April 7th, 2016 the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter had their annual labor auction. At this, the chapter’s largest fundraising event, many buyers show up to buy FFA members for up to 8 hours worth of work. This year, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter had 34 members and 2 advisors sold to community members and local businesses. The chapter was able to raise $10,800, which will be used to help fund different events our chapter does and attends including National FFA Convention and State Convention.
