Starfish: Area women seek community's help as they assist local homeless grads

Starfish members are helping area homeless graduates, one by one. “It makes a difference to this one.” An old anecdote describes a girl walking along the beach, tossing starfish back into the water to save them from death in the sand. A passer-by asks the girl what kind of difference she can make, since there are so many starfish she cannot possibly save them all. “It makes a difference to this one,” she replies as she tosses it to the safety of the water.

Learning about health and the human body with Slim Goodbody

'I will never smoke, ever:' Tilford students help Slim Goodbody with a lesson. Tilford students learned about health and the various systems of their bodies today during an assembly with Slim Goodbody. He taught them about their heart, lungs, digestive and skeletal systems, and encouraged them to eat right, exercise and avoid smoking. See more photos HERE.

Dr. Mangold and son Hugh in Mexico on medical mission trip

Dr. Mangold, Hugh and the entire family at last year's Party In Pink 5K Dr. Maggie Mangold and her 10 year old son Hugh have joined with a group from Iowa City traveling to Mazatlan, Mexico, to conduct medical exams and dispense medicines to those in need.  The group leaders are Katie Iverson, PA-C of Iowa City and her husband, Dr. William Iverson.  The group is joined by several students and others.  Sorry, no photos from the trip yet but here’s a write-up of activities as of Sunday, April 3rd by Hugh.

The Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities recently held a two day broadband conference in Des Moines attended by Tom Richtsmeier, the new Vinton Municipal Electric Utility (VMEU) General Manager and Kurt Karr, representing iVinton, the citizens group working with VMEU to improve local telecommunications.

Supervisors uphold order removing 'vicious' dog; Wiley calls for change in rule

Revisiting the Benton County ordinance prohibiting pit bulls and other “dangerous” dog breeds is on Todd Wiley’s “short list” of issues for the Benton County supervisors to address in the future. Wiley made that comment during Tuesday’s meeting, where the supervisors unanimously voted to uphold an order removing an American Staffordshire Terrier from a home in the Timber Ridge area south of Shellsburg.

REC site in Urbana to become part of state-wide solar power project

East-Central Iowa Rural Electric Cooperative (ECI REC) is part of Central Iowa Power Cooperative’s (CIPCO) utility-scale solar project which is the largest in the state. The Urbana Solar Acres facility will generate 1,133,800 kWh of energy as a part of CIPCO’s 5.5MW solar project. Once complete, the Urbana Solar Acres generation facility will contain 3,024 solar panels and generate enough electricity to power up to 113 homes.

VS Chapter celebrates FFA Week with variety of events

Mr. Chvala kissed the pig during the FFA Week assembly at VSHS. Starting on March 14, the Vinton-Shellsburg High School had the chance to participate in FFA Week. During the week there were dress up days, which everyone was allowed to participate in. The dress up days include: Movie Character Monday, Truck Tuesday, Animal Day Wednesday, Throwback Thursday, and FFA Friday. Besides dress up days, the chapter also had other things occurring throughout the week.
