A view from above: Brendan Turner's drone offers glimpse of water tower life

Brendan Turner shared this video of a view from above the water tower this week. Brendan Turner, who has shared several of the photos he took using his drone-mounted camera, has sent us a video showing some of the eastern area of Vinton, including the water tower, as well as the many birds that gather there. Shellsburg American Legion Riders donate $750 to Honor Flight program

The American Legion Riders Shellsburg Post 166 donated $750 to Eastern Iowa Honor Flight. Tues May 19th is the 20th Eastern Iowa Honor Flight. Welcome home at approx. 10:30 PM at Cedar Rapids Airport. 

River lovers seek to preserve Cedar history in new display

Water enthusiasts begin their Cedar River tour Sunday, as they seek to document historic locations. Have you ever been to Horse Thief Caves? Have you ever sent a Lover’s Leap post card? What do you know about the Mouth of Pit or Timbuc? Younger local residents might be surprised to learn that the above names are among many spots along the Cedar River that water enthusiasts have been enjoying – and naming – for generations.

Chicago Cubs to honor Vinton veteran John Gualtier tomorrow

John Gualtier waves during a parade in 2011; tomorrow he will wave to the Wrigley Field fans. During each Chicago Cubs home baseball game, the team and its fans honor someone who has served America in one of the armed services. Tomorrow's honoree will be Vinton resident John Gualtier, a World War II medic who has in recent years spent hours sharing his story in classrooms, and also thousands of volunteer hours helping veterans with transporation and paperwork as they prepare for appointments at VA facilities.

Tilford students celebrate at year-end party, despite rain

Tess Erickson and Julia Johnson shared a balloon hat during the Tilford year-end party. The rainy, cold, windy weather did not stop the Tilford PTO Year-End Party on Thursday, although it did force the hundreds of participants indoors. The students enjoyed inflatable activities in the gym; other activities included a balloon-maker.  See more photos HERE. 

Jump Rope for Heart: Tilford students raise more than $4K

These Tilford students participated in the Jump Rope for Heart AHA fund-raiser. These Tilford Elementary students participated in the Jump Rope for Heart program recently, raising money for the American Heart Association.  Front Row L to R:  Keegan Backes, Gavin Salger, Addy Phippen, Mason Coder, Ian Allsup, Grace Schminke, Angela Ahrenstein. Back Row L to R:  Bryce Walker, Alyssa Griffith, Ryan Shipley, Kylee Kirchner, Dane Moore, Tori Elwick, Paige Kelley, Logan Tharp   The top money raiser was Angela A with $528.

Emergency Medical Services Week honors Iowa responders

Governor Terry Branstad will sign a proclamation next week declaring May 17 to 23, 2015 as Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week in Iowa. The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) joins the Iowa Emergency Medical Services Association and the nearly 11,000 EMS providers in Iowa in recognizing the importance of those who provide emergency medical care.

Vinton Lions to offer free vision screening Tuesday

Lion Chuck Peterson takes a photo of Lily Hesson's eyes; the Lions offer screening this Tuesday. The Vinton  Lions will offer free drop-in vision screening for children at the Vinton Public Library, Tuesday May 19  from 9:00 to 2:00, as part of Lions World Wide Week of Service. The screening is required for children starting kindergarten in the fall, and useful for early detection of vision problems like amblyopia for all children ages one to five.

RAGBRAI Vendor Info Session

As we get ready for RAGBRAI to roll into our community on July 23, we begin to think about how we are going to feed everybody! We are going to have 10,000+ hungry riders coming into Vinton! This may be a fantastic fundraising opportunity for your organization if you are interested. It does require hard work and great volunteers, but the payoff could be great! There are 3 requirements for vendors: 1) Turn in the registration form along with the vendor fee, 2) Have proof of liability insurance and 3) Acquire a temporary food permit 1) Each vendor is required to pay a vendor fee of $375.
