On May 8th, the Vinton-Shellsburg Elementary School had a 4th Grade State Fair Day for the students to enjoy and learn more about different states. At the 4th Grade State Fair Day the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter was asked to bring in animals for the students to see and learn a little more about.
The Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter members were very enthused to bring in different animals for the 4th graders.

On May 12th, four Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter members attended District Floriculture at Hawkeye Community College.
The members that attended the CDE were Jessica Alderson, Katie Isbell, Sydney Walker, and Keri Webster.
Floriculture is a CDE that includes different areas that the girls had to compete in. These areas were corsage making, the team event, a math test, a floriculture based test, plant ID, and a pesticide use test.

Amanda Dedrick has earned more recognition for her art work. The Vinton painter and member of the Vinton Guild of Fine Arts won the top honor, Best of Show, in 2-D, for her acryllic painting of a dog.
Other V-S artists who won awards at the recent event include:
Lauren Slezak received first place in mixed media 3-D and the "Student Choice Award" for her sculpture.

For the past year, an informal group of area women has been helping those in need. They began the mobile food pantry about a year ago, and have been trying to help local graduates who don’t have the support at home that most enjoy.
Last year, the informal organization – which does not have a charter, by-laws or even a name – helped two VS graduates who they identified as independent or homeless.

The Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter introduced its new officers and presented dozens of awards to its members and supporters during the annual banquet at VSHS on Saturday, May 8. The chapter also presend graduation cords and "I Wore the Blue Jacket" t-shirts to its seniors.

One of the highlights of the 2015 Vinton-Shellsburg FFA banquet was the recital of the FFA Creed by member Meredith Glynn. Meredith memorized the creed and shared it with the chapter and their guests.

Our next RAGBRAI Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 14 at 6:30pm in the basement of Farmers Savings Bank. We have some exciting updates to share! We are also asking each committee to bring their budget requests to be submitted for consideration.
A meeting is being scheduled with Brenda Corey from the Black Hawk County Health Department to answer questions about the temporary food permit needed for all food vendors.

When Louise Fleming began her teaching career at Jesup High School, Melissa (Hinde) Heeren was among the freshmen in her ag class and the FFA. Three years later, Heeren was the only senior in Fleming’s classes.
By then, Fleming recalls, she was suggesting that Heeren become an ag teacher.
Heeren, however, had chosen veterinary science as her first career goal.

The Vinton Garden Club's plant sale on Friday was a great success, says club President Fran Stueck.
"We sold a lot, and people got good deals," said Stueck.
Many lined up in the Open Class building at the Benton County Fairgrounds to purchase a variety of plants and flowers.
A bake sale also offered bread and other goodies.

Mrs. Lacey Chvala and her first grade students helped organize a food drive for the Shellsburg Food Pantry. But instead of determining the winning class by the amount of food they bring in, organizers decided to have a "Canstruction" contest, challenging the students to creatively display their items.
"Our principal, Mr. Davis challenged all classes to do a community service project throughout the year.
