BCVP drivers are available to help with transportation to medical appointments

Paul Tope, Urbana and Larry Wiebke, VanHorne - Volunteer Drivers Who has traveled nearly 18,000 miles, made over 560 one-way trips to medical appointments serving over 65 Benton County residents in one year’s time…the Benton County Volunteer Program Medical Transportation Assistance Volunteers…that’s who! On June 14 volunteers came from Urbana, Vinton, Van Horne, Keystone, Watkins, Norway, Luzerne and Belle Plaine to converge in Belle Plaine to attend training.

Party in Pink raises $10K for Gifts of Hope

The Party in Pink Committee presents Mike Timmermans of VGH a $10K check. A total of 538 walkers and runners helped the Breast Cancer Survivors raise $10,000 for the Virginia Gay Hospital Gifts of Hope program Friday night at Riverside Park. Despite the rain which fell up to race time, the volunteers, walker and runners showed up to compete and help others. VGH Foundation Director Mike Timmermans told the crowd that it's great to live in a city like Vinton that cares.

Party in the Park: Saturday brings talent to Riverside Park

VSHS football coach Jim Womochil takes one for the GO VS scholarship team. Groups of Cooling Dancers, the VS Middle School Jazz Band, and a variety of singers, dancers and other performers took their turns today as Party in the Park activities moved to Riverside Park.  Many lined up for their turn at one of the inflatable activites, including rock climbing and baseball throwing. Chloe the Clown offered balloons and VSHS cheerleaders painted faces.

Party in the Park Parade a success; escapes rain

Rockin' the 80s, in a different sense of the word; PIP parade participants rode on Saturday. Despite the threat of rain, the Party in the Park parade participants were able to walk or ride the entire route. The parade ended about an hour before the storm began. With the theme, "80s Rewind," the parade included many decorations and costumes reminding viewers of that decade. See more photos HERE.

Fireworks postponed, again!

The fireworks display, rescheduled for tonight after last night's rain, has been postponed again. The threat of more storms caused the VPRD leaders to delay the fireworks until a date to be named later. Local leaders may also try to work with the Spazmatics on setting a date for a make-up concert.

Party in the Park begins

Familes make their way down 4th Street during the Kiddie Parade. The rain stayed away and the crowds filled the parking lot at Farmers Bank, Fourth Street and the courthouse lawn Thursday evening for the beginning of the 2014 Party in the Park.  After the free dinner of hot dogs and chips at the bank, the children rode bikes, scooters and other vehicles to the courthouse, where jugglers, music and a variety of activities awaited.

'Shark Tank:' IBSSS campers selling items today, tonight

Shark Tank: Aubree Dunn of Iowa City sings a jingle to advertise the cookies in a jar. Didn’t the Braille School close?  This is a question many Vinton residents will be asking next week when they see blind and visually impaired students out and about in town, selling their wares.  While it is true that the school doesn’t have a residential component anymore, it offers numerous on-campus opportunities throughout the summer and on weekends during the school year.

VSHS teacher Kelly Steffen earns James Madison Foundation Fellowship

The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation of Alexandria, VA, announced today that it has selected 51 teachers, including Vinton-Shellsburg High School history teacher Kelly Steffen, as James Madison Fellows for 2014 in its twenty-third annual fellowship competition. James Madison Fellowships support the graduate study of American history by aspiring and experienced secondary school teachers of American history, American government, and social studies.

Party in the Park attendees to have opportunities to help others

This Harley, the prize for the Special Olympics Benefit Ride raffle in August, will be at PIP. Party in the Park begins tonight, and those who attend the Friday and Saturday activities at Riverside Park will have two opportunities to help others, while getting a good deal on groceries and/or a chance to win a brand new Harley Davidson motorcycle.
