Storm damaged Fifth Street Koffee Haus reopens

The storm-damaged Fifth Street Koffee Haus opened today, Sept. 1.      It could have been worse, says Fifth Street Koffee Haus owner John Yundt, adding that it would have been ok with him if the damage from the July 11 storm had been less severe.     Yet, said Yundt, he was pleasantly surprised to be able to reopen the business at the beginning of September, considering the serious nature of the damage.

Football returns to Vinton as Vikings host S. Tama

With scoreboard, lights and press box repaired, the VS football field is ready for Friday's game.        The storm-damaged football field will be ready for action tomorrow night when Vinton-Shellsburg hosts South Tama.      The Vikings defeated Benton Community, 18-12 in a nail-biting overtime game last Friday. South Tama won at Saydel, 58-23. Like virtually all other teams, the Vikings begin their season with two non-district opponents before playing the seven other teams in their district.

Boomfest: A successful second year

Many children lined up for balloons at Boomfest.      The 2nd Annual Boom-Fest Arts & Crafts Show went fantastic!  We welcomed over 50 vendors to the downtown streets of Vinton along with food vendors and fun activities for the kids.       World Class Juggler Doug Sayers joined us from 1pm – 5pm and put on quite a show with the kids.  He juggled everything from balls to fire and it was a huge draw.

Traveling down the Lincoln Highway -- Annual Tour stops at Youngville

A 1961 Studebaker and an antique Ford were among the cars in the Iowa Lincoln Highway Tour.      Stand outside the Youngville Cafe, next to the antique gas pumps, and look at the road that stretches east and west to the horizon.      A hundred years ago, it wasn't there.       It was not until 1913 that the Lincoln Highway linked New York City and San Francisco. It was the first intercontinental highway.

Benton Band celebrating success, growth and $25,000 donation

The Benton Community Band performs part of its 'Journey' show during halftime of Friday's game.     When Scott Weber arrived at Benton Community High School in 2007, there were 42 band members, and it had been more than 20 years since any BC instrumental performance earned a Division 1 rating.      But even a casual spectator can see that there is a new era in progress for the Benton Community Band.     Weber was all smiles on Friday night as he watched his band -- which now has 115 members -- perform part of their 2011 routine, and heard the audience roaring its approval of the performance.

Chris Cakes bring fun, food to IPA breakfast

Jaicob Breitbach tries catching a pancake tossed by Eric Hohensee of Chris Cakes.      Just as the parents to bring their children to Boomtown may have a hard time telling their kids to not play with matches, the people who ate breakfast at Boomtown may have trouble saying, "Don't play with your food."     That's because a very important part of the Chris Cakes pancake catering is playing.
