Another Successful Year for Alpha Psi

Three Americorps NCC  volunteers from the Vinton training center spoke at the November Alpha Psi Tea   The Alpha Psi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma serving Tama and Benton counties ended their year with many successful projects and is looking forward to 2011.   November saw the annual Alpha Psi Tea at the Iowa Juvenile Home (IJH) in Toledo. The tea has been an opportunity for members to mentor young ladies at the IJH by providing programs, activities and financial support for the residential facility.

Handgun training classes set for January

     A new law going into effect on January 1, 2011 requires the Sheriff of each county to issue a permit to carry weapons to any person 21 years of age or older who is not addicted to alcohol, not likely to use a weapon unlawfully or in such a manner as would endanger the person’s self or others, is not a felon, and has not been convicted of a serious or aggravated misdemeanor in the past three years.

School board, legislators wrestle with numbers

Lifelong learning continues for teachers receiving national certification

  Sixteen Iowa State Education Association (ISEA) members have received the 2010 National Board Certification, the highest recognition a teacher can receive in the profession. The total number of Iowans who have received the NBCT ranking stands at 664. Nationwide, approximately 91,000 teachers have been NBCT certified and Iowa's total shows a 2.

A new, surprising milestone: 700,000 reasons we say thanks

       Even though I work with words, I play with numbers.      I measured the area of the foundation for my new house simply by walking it off, and placing boards where I guessed the proper distance was. I was a bit surprised at how close I came when the contractor marked the spot.     When I wake up, I try to guess what time it is before I look at the clock.

Two Vikes of the Week honored for extreme unselfishness

Early Dismissal for Vinton-Shellsburg today

All Vinton-Shellsburg schools will have a 2 hour early dismissal today due to the weather! There will be no PM Preschool.

Mr. Frazier's students entertain families with winter plays

The boy who stuttered....this story tells how his classmates helped him tell a story. The Big Bad Wolf did not kill the Three Little Pigs on purpose. He accidentally sneezed them to death.  "I was framed!" declared the Wolf.  Likewise, the Woodsman did not use his three wishes from the fairy like you thought. He wasted them wishing for a sausage for supper.  Mr. John Frazier's second grade students at Tilforod elementary re-told these and other fairy tales during their winter play concert Friday afternoon.

Fire destroys rural Brandon home

Brandon firemen fight a fire at the Lester Geiger home on 24th Ave. Drive Wednesday, Dec. 15. For more than 35 years, Lester and Donna Geiger lived in a one-story house north of Minne Estema Park in rural Brandon, keeping it warm in the winter with wood and heating oil. Lester said he was cleaning up a heating oil leak -- he had filled the tank a day earlier and there was a problem with the filter -- with wood chips. Something caused the wood and oil to ignite, and soon the house was in flames.

Area residents digging out

Snow removal began Thursday as the first big winter storm of the season covered Vinton with 4-5. For the first time this winter season, Vinton area residents are manning shovels, snow plows and other sidewalk- and street-clearing equipment. Approximately five inches of snow covered the ground as residents awoke Thursday morning.
