LEC windows installed

Windows have been installed at the LEC job site. Enclosing the LEC allows inside work to continue. Passers-by can see a small but significant step in the progress of the new Law Enforcement Center: Windows. Windows have been installed in the administrative offices, signifying that workers are closing in on the goal of enclosing the building before serious winter weather arrives.  The project remains on schedule for a May 1 opening.

Furnace 'hiccup' disrupts day at Clingman Pharmacy; minimal smoke damage

Modern technology helps spread news, both good and bad these days. At around 10 a.m. today (Wednesday, Dec. 8) someone asked on Facebook, "Is there a fire in the ACT 1 studio above Clingman Pharmacy." There was smoke, but no fire, in that building this morning, reports Jon Clingman. Business had resumed to mostly usual by 11 a.m. "We had a little hiccup with one of our furnaces," he said.

NCCC Team Gets First Taste of Disaster Relief

Zack Gould, Rockford Mich., showing off an area the team will cover Maple 5, the world’s best AmeriCorps NCCC team ever, was pulled from their project restoring prairie grasslands in Indiana and sent to Ottumwa, IA to assist the Wapello County Long Term Recovery Committee until Dec. 18.  On their first day the team received a case management orientation and is currently mapping and organizing the residents in order to expedite the survey process.

Each tag has a gift idea for someone who needs a little extra help this year to have a Merry Christmas.

Jim Huber's framed poetry available at Clingman's

Jim Huber holds some of his framed works of poetry; they are offered to customers at Clingman's.      Jim Huber describes himself as a "scientist turned poet."      He wrote his first poem while still in high school; now his collection includes nearly 3,000.      Huber writes about history, farming and faith. He shares a poem most Sundays at Prairie Creek Christian Church. He has written poems for community milestones, such as the 75th anniversary of Farmers Savings Bank in Vinton.

Grandson of sailor who served at Pearl Harbor leads memorial service

Zach Uthoff plays taps to honor the USS Arizona and those lost during attack on Pearl Harbor.      Alex Vasquez, at the end of the first Pearl Harbor Memorial Service at Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School several years ago, told the small crowd that day that as long as he is a teacher, he will lead such a ceremony every Dec. 7.       Mr. Vasquez, with the help of several eighth-grade students, continued that tradition on Tuesday, the 69th anniversary of the "Day of Infamy.

Mount Auburn residents celebrate Christmas with Santa at Legion Hall

Michelle Oldfather and Pat Rausch draw names for the Annual Mount Auburn Christmas Party raffle.      The annual Mount Auburn Christmas Party was held at the Mount Auburn Legion on Saturday, December 4. Community members enjoyed coffee, cocoa, cookies and conversation. Santa also arrived to share gifts with the children. 

Pearl Harbor ceremony today at VSMS

VSMS teacher Alex Vasquez invites everyone to Pearl Harbor Memorial service at noon today.      Every year, Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School teacher Alex Vasquez leads a Pearl Harbor Memorial Service at noon on Dec. 7 -TODAY. This year's event takes place in the VSMS Library-Media Center (LMC). The doors open at noon; the ceremony begins at 12:10 p.m.      Everyone is invited to attend this remembrance on the 69th anniversary of Pearl Harbor.

Brandon area residents celebrate Christmas

A fishing enthusiast made this tree for the Bear Creek open house. Kettlecorn made over a fire. Wagon rides through the town. Area businesses and families decorating trees for the contest and making wreaths and baskets for the auction. A soup supper at the Methodist Church. Entertainment at both the Methodist and Christian Church. Open houses in several locations, including the historic Bear Creek Church.  All of those are traditions of the Brandon Christmas.
