VSHS band members selected for WaMaC Honor Band

These VSHS band members were selected for the WAMAC Honor Band this week.   The 2010 WAMAC Conference Honor Band was held Tuesday, November 16 at Benton Community H.S. Directors for the event were Mr. David Law (9-10 BAND) and Mr. Paul Brizzi (11-12 BAND). Several Vinton-Shellsburg band members participated in this group.I was really proud of our selected Vinton-Shellsburg band students.  They really did a good job and worked hard at the honor band.

Virginia Gay Tree of Lights campaign begins with Initial Lighting

VSHS band members play Christmas songs after VGH tree was lit Thursday. For 19 years, Virginia Gay Hospital leaders have been lighting the evergreen tree outside the front lobby for the annual Tree of Lights campaign.  Looking back on the first event 19 years, ago, VGH Hospital Board Chairman Mark Mossman noticed a change that makes the event a little more logistically challenging than it was then:  "That tree is a lot bigger than it used to be," he told the audience during the initial tree lighting Thursday evening.

Lions raise funds for Honor Flight with chili supper

Lions Mike Barron and Dr. Alan Woodhouse serve Honor Flight veteran David Schirm at chili supper. It is fitting that one of the first few customers at the Vinton Lions Club chili supper Thursday evening was David Schirm of Vinton.  Schirm, a World War II veteran, wore a red shirt and white cap to the Vinton Fire Station for the event. They were the same shirt and cap he wore in September when he was one of 100 veterans from eastern Iowa to fly to Washington, D.

Patriotic Parade combines Christmas, tribute to veterans

Craig Streeter's car took on a new look for the parade. The second annual Patriotic Veterans Christmas Parade featured more entries and a larger crowd of spectators than the debut event of 2009. Approximately 20 floats or vehicles rolled through downtown Vinton, many of them with red, white and blue lights and flags as well as Christmas trees.  Legion Commander Craig Streeter had one of the more interesting entries.

Santa Arrives! Downtown Vinton enters holiday season

Sophie and Chloe Mossman sit on Santa's lap after his arrival at the courthouse Thursday evening. Vinton's children had their first glimpse of Santa Claus on Thursday evening, first as they watched him ride on a fire truck in the Second Annual Patriotic Veterans Christmas Parade, and then inside the Benton County Courthouse. After joining local leaders for the tree lighting, Santa went into the courthouse, where he listened as children told them they'd been good and asked for specific gifts.

Animal Shelter advice as well as EMERGENCY NEED

'Tis the season to make it cozy...volunteers take a few minutes to winterize the animal shelter Volunteers recently put up tarps at the Vinton/Benton Co. Animal Shelter to protect the shelter dogs during winter weather.  If your dog lives outside, please be sure to prepare their living area for winter before it arrives. Emergency NEED!!   The Vinton/Benton Co. Animal Shelter is in need of nutritious puppy food (Diamond, Science, Diet, Iam's, etc.

Farmers Savings Bank & Trust presents VSHS Choir Dept proceeds of Estes concert

Darlys Hulme presents a check to Eric Mohlis to benefit the Vinton Shellsburg music program.   Darlys Hulme, president of Farmers Savings Bank & Trust, Vinton presented a check for $8,500.00 from the ticket sales of the Simon Estes concert to Eric Mohlis, director of choral activities at the Vinton – Shellsburg High School, for the benefit of the music program.

Wreath from Timmers will welcome guests to tree lighting

Mark and Carol Timmer donated this wreath to VGH; Red Cedar Izaak Walton members put it together.      When the guests arrive at Virginia Gay Hospital for the Initial Tree Lighting Ceremony tonight (Thursday, Nov. 18), a wreath donated by Mark and Carol Timmer will be among the decorations they see when they enter the lobby. The Timmers donated have donated the wreath, which was assembled by members of the Red Cedar Chapter of the Izaak Walton League, to the hospital.

Career Day: VSMS students learn about variety of jobs

Career Day gave VSMS students a chance to see, and experience, a variety of careers. Today (Wednesday, Nov 17) is Career Day at Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School. The eighth grade students learned about a variety of careers from people in those occupations. The visitors discussed their jobs, why they like their work and the challenges they face. The students heard from a financial advisor, police officer, and medical professionals, and others.
