At its May board meeting, the board of directors of East-Central Iowa Rural Electric Cooperative voted to retire
$500,000 in patronage* back to its member-consumers. Dividends from the cooperative’s profits in 1992, 2003 and 2004 were returned in June.
ECI REC sent checks to former members. The 90-day window to cash these checks has now passed, and the people listed below have not yet cashed their checks.

I had the privilege of meeting our Nation's latest hero on Tuesday, November 23. I was humbled to be in the same room with Sgt. Giunta and his wife Jennifer. They are a typical Iowan family with strong moral values and a pleasure to meet.
The news media had to wait because Sgt Sal wanted to talk to his fellow veterans at Hiawatha Legion Hall.

The Benton Soil & Water Conservation District Commissioners would like to announce two scholarships available to students in Benton County. Students are eligible for either of these scholarships if their planned course of study is in any of the fields of agriculture and/or natural resources.

Vinton-Shellsburg students recently held their magazine sales fundraisers. Students sold more than 620 subscriptions over a 2 week period. Students who sold 10 or more subscriptions won a ride in a limo and were treated to lunch at Pizza Ranch.

A Virginia Gay Hospital employee’s new holiday idea has raised $3,500 for the VGH Foundation.
The first annual Holiday Tree Walk ended on Monday; the silent auction of 21 trees and a wreath raised just under $3,500 toward the annual Tree of Lights Fund-raiser, said VGH Foundation Director Mike Timmermans.

Two years and a day after federal law enforcement officers showed up in Vinton and left with more than $750,000 and some of her prized family heirlooms, Phung Ca “Polly” Long quietly pleaded guilty on Friday, Nov. 19, to conspiring with her husband to harbor illegal aliens. She also pleaded guilty to making false statements to the Iowa Medicaid Program.

Today is the last day to bid on the Christmas trees for the Holiday Tree Walk at Virginia Gay Hospital. It's also the last day of bidding for the wreaths on display in the lower level hallway leading to the Rehab Services (Physical Therapy) area. Department members have made a variety of wreaths. While most are for the Christmas holiday, there is one wreath with an autumn harvest theme and another with a "Twilight" theme that even includes a DVD of the popular vampire movie series.
