Utility's power provider expands wind power capabilities

       East-Central Iowa REC’s power provider is adding more wind generation to its transmission portfolio of energy resources. Along with eleven other distribution cooperatives here in the state of Iowa, ECI REC purchases their power from Central Iowa Power Cooperative (CIPCO) based in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines.      Today, CIPCO announced that they have entered into a 20-year power purchase agreement to buy 41 megawatts of electricity from a third – the Elk Wind Farm.

VSMS band members perform winter concert

The VSMS 8th grade band plays 'An American Celebration,' a medley of patriotic favorites.      Director Jody Biershenk led the Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School 6th, 7th, and 8th grade bands, as well as the VSMS Jazz Band, in their annual winter concert Thursday evening.      The bands played a variety of popular, patriotic and holiday-themed music as parents, relatives and friends filled the VSHS auditorium to hear the concert.

Lego Surge: VSMS boys compete in Lego League contest

Winter celebration: Mrs. Barron's class sings of snow, snowmen and reindeer

That's what it's all about in the winter: Tilford 1B students dance the Reindeer-Pokey. They sang about a pet snowball that disappeared, after wetting the bed.  They did a new version of a favorite dance: The Reindeer-Pokey. They sang about the originality of snowflakes and the mystery of snow.  That's how the 1B students of Rhonda Barron celebrated Christmas, performing a variety of winter-themed songs for parents and grandparents Thursday afternoon in the Tilford auditorium.

Vehicular homicide charges filed in July 2009 fatal crash

Brandon Hundley: Driver in 2009 accident was charged with vehicular homicide.        A 21 year old Vinton man has been charged as a result of a fatality accident that occurred in Benton County on July 30, 2009.      Brandon Leo Hundley has been charged with Vehicular Homicide / Operating while Intoxicated, a class B felony. The charge is a result of an investigation into a single vehicle accident on 33rd Avenue Drive just north of 59th Street Trail which is located about 3.

Duong pleads guilty in immigration case

       On December 14, 2010, Chan Gia Duong, 43, the owner of the Peony Chinese restaurant in Vinton, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to harbor aliens for commercial gain and  filing a false 2007 tax return.         At the plea hearing, Duong admitted he conspired to hire and harbor illegal aliens at Peony restaurants he operated with his wife, Phung Ca Long, in Vinton and Tama.

Three from VSHS Band play in NEIBA Honor Band Festival

James Yenser, Megan Jorgensen & Nic Gardner with Mr. Smith; they performed in NIEBA Honor Band.      Three students from the Vinton-Shellsburg High School Band were selected to participate in the Northeast Iowa Bandmasters' Association Honor Band Festival on Saturday, December 4, 2010. These students performed in one of two 128 piece, select ensembles made up of instrumentalists from sixty schools in Northeast Iowa.      The students rehearsed all day on Saturday and presented a concert at the Oelwein High School Gymnasium.

'Growing Awareness: VPD officers' new mustaches help Food Pantry

These pins were seen on many VPD officers throughout Novembrer     The end of November marked the end of “Growing Awareness,” an effort by the Vinton Police Department to raise awareness about the Benton County Food Pantry. During the month of November, several members of the Vinton Police Department grew mustaches as a fun way to spark conversation and promote the Benton County Food Pantry.

Betterton food drive today; a few appointments may be available

Chiropractors Matt Betterton and Scott Barron expect to serve 100 clients today during the Betterton Family Chirorpractic food drive. On this day, instead of charging patients for a spinal adjustment, the chiropractors ask for a donation for the local food pantry.  Betterton has done this for years; this year, Barron, who recently joined the practice, is also participating.
