The Vinton-Shellsburg High School first trimester Honor Roll has been released. More than 200 students from grades 9-12 earned that honor this trimester. See the complete list HERE.

The 2010 WAMAC Conference Honor Band was held Tuesday, November 16 at Benton Community H.S. Directors for the event were Mr. David Law (9-10 BAND) and Mr. Paul Brizzi (11-12 BAND). Several Vinton-Shellsburg band members participated in this group.I was really proud of our selected Vinton-Shellsburg band students. They really did a good job and worked hard at the honor band.

For 19 years, Virginia Gay Hospital leaders have been lighting the evergreen tree outside the front lobby for the annual Tree of Lights campaign.
Looking back on the first event 19 years, ago, VGH Hospital Board Chairman Mark Mossman noticed a change that makes the event a little more logistically challenging than it was then:
"That tree is a lot bigger than it used to be," he told the audience during the initial tree lighting Thursday evening.

It is fitting that one of the first few customers at the Vinton Lions Club chili supper Thursday evening was David Schirm of Vinton.
Schirm, a World War II veteran, wore a red shirt and white cap to the Vinton Fire Station for the event. They were the same shirt and cap he wore in September when he was one of 100 veterans from eastern Iowa to fly to Washington, D.

The second annual Patriotic Veterans Christmas Parade featured more entries and a larger crowd of spectators than the debut event of 2009. Approximately 20 floats or vehicles rolled through downtown Vinton, many of them with red, white and blue lights and flags as well as Christmas trees.
Legion Commander Craig Streeter had one of the more interesting entries.

Vinton's children had their first glimpse of Santa Claus on Thursday evening, first as they watched him ride on a fire truck in the Second Annual Patriotic Veterans Christmas Parade, and then inside the Benton County Courthouse.
After joining local leaders for the tree lighting, Santa went into the courthouse, where he listened as children told them they'd been good and asked for specific gifts.
