Ohlsen retires from Farm Bureau, but plans to go to college again

After retiring from FB, Frank Ohlsen plans to pursue a third career as a substance abuse counselor. For 26 years, Frank Ohlsen has been a mentor to those who have struggled with alcohol and drug abuse issues.  Now that he is retiring from Farm Bureau, Ohlsen's main goal is to do more to help those people.  "I'm going to get some schooling," Ohlsen said Friday afternoon, during his retirement reception at the Benton County Farm Bureau office.

Dollars for Scholars greenery adorns downtown for Christmas

A large group of VSHS students and volunteers decorated downtown with greenery and red bows. The Vinton-Shellsburg students, including National Honor Society and FFA members, with the help of some teachers and adult volunteers, placed greenery throughout downtown Vinton on Saturday, as many retailers participated in the annual Dollars for Scholars fund-raiser. It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas, just in time for Thursday's patriotic Christmas parade and the arrival of Santa Claus.

Hospital receives donation in honor of Barb Becker Guillory

The donation in honor of Barb Becker Guillory will help nurses help patients.        Even when she was terminally ill, Barb Becker Guillory thought of others. She was concerned about other patients, as well as the nurses who cared for her during her sickness.      After her death, Barb’s widower, Glenn wanted to share with others in the way that Barb would have.      Guillory presented the hospital a donation that will pay for a device to make it easier and safer for nurses to move immobile patients at the hospital.

Iowa's 'Goose Man' bringing his flock to Party in the Park

The Goose Man and his flock will perform during Vinton's Party in the Park 2011.        "The goose is booked."      That play on words came from a Vinton Parks and Recreation Board member Thursday morning as the board discussed one of the entertainment for Party in the Park 2011.      The Gooseman is coming.       Paul Messerschmidt -- a former western Iowa school classmate of two Vinton residents, VPRD Board President Jeff Peterson and Bob Noren -- will bring his flock of trained geese to Vinton in late June.

Winning Edge: Officers learn tactical safety during session in Vinton

Nearly 100 officers from all over Iowa learned tactical safety during class in Vinton Wednesday.      Brian McKenna’s journey to Vinton began at a funeral for a fellow officer.      McKenna, a retired police officer, author, and owner of Winning Edge Training, was in Vinton on Wednesday to teach officers the best ways to confront armed suspects.      The training included some graphic videos showing the shooting of officers who did not survive such attacks.
