D. Michael Hibbs

Mike Hibbs VINTON – David Michael Hibbs, son of Dr. David and Frona Hibbs, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2014, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids after suffering an illness. Mike was born on December 5, 1941, and graduated with the class of 1960 at Washington High School in Vinton. Mike was a lifelong resident of Vinton. He was a gifted athlete who loved playing baseball, basketball, football and running track in school.

Brandon J. Smith

Brandon J. Smith (1988-2014) Brandon J. Smith, 25, of Quasqueton, died Saturday, May 31, 2014 at his home as a result of an accident in his shop. He was born November 1, 1988 in Waterloo, son of Scott and Amy Smith.  He graduated from Northern University High School in 2007 and was a truck driver with Martin Brothers Distributing.

Marion R. Schwartz

Vinton—Marion R. Schwartz, 94, died Saturday, May 24, 2014 at the Vinton Lutheran Home from complications of Alzheimers. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton with Pastor Mark Leckband officiating.  Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to service time at the church on Wednesday.  Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery with Military Rites.

Helen Abrams VAN HORNE:      Helen Mae Abrams, 79, died Sunday, May 18, 2014 at the Vinton Lutheran Home following an extended illness. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 PM, Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at the Vinton Lutheran Home Chapel.      She was born June 29, 1934 at Long Beach, NY to Louis and Mae (Reed) Abrams.

George H. 'Chub' Dunkelberger

Chub Dunkelberger LA PORTE CITY - George Henry "Chub" Dunkelberger, 95, of La Porte City, died Monday, May 19, 2014, at Windsor Manor in Vinton due to complications of age. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 22, 2014, at First Christian Church in Vinton with Rev. Connie Wacht officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton.

Ruth Anne Freeburg died at the age of 61 on Thursday, May 15, 2014, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Services will take place at the Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown on Sunday, May 25, 2014, at 12:30 PM, with refreshments served after the service. Burial with Military Rites will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery, Grundy Center.

Derrick P. Tharp

Derrick P. Tharp      CEDAR RAPIDS:  Derrick P. “Red Dog” Tharp, 52 of Cedar Rapids and formerly of Vinton died Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at his home in Cedar Rapids.  A Celebration of Derrick’s Life will be from 1 - 4 PM, Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 East Sixth Street in Vinton.  Private Family Committal Services will be held at a later date at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton.

RONALD DEAN GUSTAFSON

Ron died at 75 years on Sunday, May 4, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents: Arthur and Edith Gustafson, his brothers: Phillip, Duane, and Gary Gustafson, and survived by his brother Jim Gustafson. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ann (Grandchamp) Gustafson; his daughter, Tiffany Ferrugia and husband Ed of Kearney, MO.; son, Trent and wife Melissa Gustafson of Charlotte, NC.
