Steffen signs to play Volleyball at North Iowa Area Community College

Rebecca Steffen signed a scholarship to play Volleyball at North Iowa Area Community College. Becca grew up around volleyball, with her mom Kelly as her coach and her older sister played as well. She played organized volleyball with her classmates from 4th grade on and then starting playing club volleyball in sixth grade.

Union & Decorah Defeat Vinton Shellsburg in Wrestling

Shephard leads VSU swimmers at State

Members of the VSU Girls Swim Team competed at State this past weekend in Marshalltown. Arabella Shepard, Geordyn Webster, Clarissa Carolan & Lexi Goodell swam in the 200 Medley Relay event, finishing in 29th place. Arabella also swam in the 100 Butterfly (6th place overall) and the 100 Backstroke (13th place overall). Arabella Shepard was 6th in the 100 butterfly.

Lexi Goodell Big day for VSU girls! Arabella Shepard qualified in 2 individual events (100 butterfly and 100 backstroke) and our 200 Medley Relay also qualified (made up of Shepard, Lexi Goodell, Geordyn Webster, and Clarissa Carolan). Almost every single VSU swim today ended in a time drop - each swimmer achieving at least 1 personal best.    The Medley Relay got the ball rolling in the first event of the day - cutting 4 seconds off their season best and beating out a powerful Cedar Falls team for 3rd place.

Hadachek talks of 'Pillars of winning tradition' as team prepare for 11 playoff

Coach Hadachek congratulates lineman Liam Stone Early in the 2007 football season, Joe Hadachek gestured to the team on other side of the field at the end one of his very first games as the Union head coach. “They have a winning football tradition,” he said that night. “Here at Union, we are trying to start one.” Now, Union is preparing for the 2018 playoff season, its 11th consecutive post-season appearance.

Union, Benton to begin playoffs next Friday

Union will travel to Waukon on Friday, as the 2018 Iowa High School football post-season begins. Meanwhile, Benton Community will host Greene County. Union went to West Marshall last night, hoping for a win and an outright Class 2A, District 2 championshiop. But the 26-16 loss to the Trojans means that Union, Benton and West Marshall will share the district title and automatic playoff berths.

Regular season ends tonight; Benton, Union have high playoff hopes

Vinton-Shellsburg wraps up its football season at Benton Community, playing a Bocat team that still hopes to at least share the Class 2A District 7 title. The Vikings (0-8) will play the Bobcats in Van Horne. Benton is 7-1 overall and 3-1 in district play, one game behind Union, which is 4-0 in district play. Union plays at West Marshall, which lost to Benton.

VS freshman Fett earns trip to State Cross Country Meet

After finishing third at the WaMaC Conference cross country meet last week, Vinton-Shellsburg freshman Kay Fett earned a spot in the Class 3A State Cross Country Meet with a 4th place finish in the state qualifying meet at West Delaware Thursday evening. Coach Jeff Mangold says Kay's success is a combination of talent and hard work. "From day one at practice this summer, Kay was one of the hardest working, if not the hardest working, runner on the team, and that continued through every practice for the entire season," says Mangold.

On to State: Area athletes advance in Special Olympic bowling

Several local Special Olympics athletes competed at the East Central Special Olympics Regional Bowling competition on Tuesday, and a few of them advanced to the State contest by finishing first in their division. All first place finishers earned the chance to compete Nov. 17, at Westdale Bowling Center in Cedar Rapids. Mikey Malmgren (with Benton Community), 1st.
