AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps Turned a Day of Remembrance into a Day of Action

NCCC FEMA Corps Pine 6 at Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity worksite during 9/11 rememberance. By Kimberly Walker September 11 is a day that has become a national day of service.  NCCC FEMA Corps team, Pine 6, participated in this service day by partnering with Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity for two days providing home construction in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Pine 6 was tasked with installing interior walls to enable the setting of the roof trusses the following week.

She chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because she wanted to make a difference and give back to the community. Lynne graduated from Valhalla High School in 2008 and Whittier College in May 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and Spanish and a minor in anthropology.

Cedar 4 helps improve Nature Conversancy

Amanda, Zach and Allison are working on bracing the roof of the warming hut.   NCCC team, Cedar Four’s sixth and final project is working withThe Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the Plymouth County Conservation Board in Westfield, Iowa. The Nature Conservancy is home to the Broken Kettle Grasslands, which is the largest prairie land in Iowa and is home to over 40 bison and a rare species of snakes. Plymouth County Conservation Board manages 2200 acres of parks and public recreational areas, including a hill used for snow tubing in the winter.

Cedar 1 helps with Indiana park beautification

The team is working on a variety of projects that will contribute to the upkeep and beautification of the parks. The team will work in 11 of the county’s parks, which are used for leisure activities, exercising, outdoor education and observing wildlife to name a few.
